Starting Postpartum depression counseling

What is postpartum depression counseling?

Postpartum depression counseling is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on treating individuals who have given birth and are experiencing clinically significant symptoms of depression in the months after giving birth. This condition is often a result of the drastic hormone and life changes that occur after childbirth.

How does postpartum depression counseling work?

To treat postpartum depression, Thriveworks Mt Pleasant therapists will use common approaches for depression treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy, while keeping in mind the hormonal changes and added stress that come with giving birth and taking care of a child. The approaches used are often tailored to the client in order to make treatment as effective as possible. Psychotherapy may also take place alongside the use of antidepressants or other medications.

Is postpartum depression counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks postpartum depression counseling in Mt Pleasant, SC is conducted both in person and virtually via online counseling. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

What Is Postpartum Sadness or “Baby Blues”?

Up to 80% of moms experience “baby blues” within the first few days of birth. It can last for minutes or hours per day over many weeks or months. Symptoms may include:

  • Unprovoked sadness, weeping or crying
  • Irritability, impatience
  • Restlessness, fatigue, insomnia
  • Poor concentration
  • Diminished appetite

It is not fully understood why these symptoms occur for many women. The abrupt shift in daily routine, disrupted sleep patterns, and exhaustion are all theorized to cause hormonal changes affecting mood and coping skills.

Do I Have Postpartum Depression?

Some moms experience intense symptoms and may be suffering from postpartum anxiety and depression without knowing it. Postpartum can affect anyone. It has nothing to do with what you have done or what you may not have done, and there is no way to prevent it. Postpartum anxiety and depression affect an estimated 1 in 8 women. Symptoms can include:

  • Sadness, mood swings, crying uncontrollably
  • Disinterest in activities and withdrawal
  • Lack of concentration, loss of energy, excessive fatigue
  • Panic attacks and/or anxiety
  • Hopelessness, fear, guilt
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Inability to bond with your baby
  • Obsessive thoughts
  • Disorientation
  • Hallucinations
  • Paranoia
  • Agitation
  • Thoughts of harming your baby or yourself
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Postpartum anxiety and depression can last for months to years if left untreated. Talk and teletherapy are both effective in managing symptoms. If you’re ready to get started, please contact Thriveworks Mt. Pleasant to schedule a session by calling 843-606-6223.

My therapist at Thriveworks, Susan, is warm and and relatable. I am a late-diagnosed autistic woman. I am basically now learning what everyone else learned in kindergarten. I have a history of broken marriages and jobs I was invited to leave because I didn't fit in, to put it mildly. She has helped me in so many ways, and I can now see decisions I made that I thought were just what had happened to me. I feel much more capable and hopeful now. I wish I could have met her years ago. I have gone to many therapists over the years, but now I can see how I can feel hopeful about my life and my relationships with my daughters and my grandchildren.

Susan is my Thriveworks therapist. She is helping me set boundaries and make better choices. I am learning a lot from her. Having Asperger's, I often can be quite blunt. I am gradually learning how to say less but make better connections. She
