About
I believe that therapy should be a space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered.
Hi, I’m Madison Powell, Resident in Counseling, MSEd. I work with adults who are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, stress, and major life transitions. Many of the clients I support feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Whether you're looking to heal from past experiences, build healthier coping skills, strengthen your relationships, or feel more confident in managing life's challenges, I aim to provide a supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and respected.
My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your unique needs. Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, person-centered, and narrative approaches, I help clients identify patterns, reframe unhelpful beliefs, build resilience, and develop practical tools for lasting change and personal growth.
Seeking support takes courage, and you don't have to navigate life's challenges alone. My goal is to create a safe, compassionate environment where you feel empowered to grow, heal, and move forward with confidence. If you're ready to invest in yourself and your well-being, I would be honored to be part of your journey.

As a blue-collar middle-aged native of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, I can relate to the cultural, vocational, family-oriented, economic, and generally stressful challenges that everyday Americans face.
Robb is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) who manages and treats a wide range of mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, family difficulties, school issues, sleep/insomnia, work-related stress, and many more challenges that everyday Americans face. He is passionate about providing quality, compassionate, concise, and nonjudgmental mental health services to clients of all ages. As a PMHNP, Robb's role is multifaceted, including educator, mental health advocate, therapist, and medication manager. While working in psychiatric hospitals, Robb has learned how to listen to his patients the way he wants to be listened to when he sees his own personal physician. Robb makes it his goal to include the patient in every step of the decision-making process to individually tailor the patient's treatment plan to their needs. Whether it is medication management, therapy, or a coordinated effort with the patient's personal healthcare providers, Robb wants to deliver the fastest, easiest, and most effective results that he can for his clients.
Robb completed his Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) at East Tennessee State University and began his medical career as a Patient Care Tech over 20 years ago. Robb possesses strong clinical skills and a natural ability to build rapport with patients and families. Robb is frequently appointed as a teacher and is given the responsibility of orienting new nurses at every hospital and facility he has ever worked in, including East Tennessee State University. The same genuine nature and approachability that make him a good teacher are what make it easy for Robb's patients to talk to him. Robb believes that the best tool every mental health provider has available to them is their ears. He knows that if he really listens to his patients, then with his training he can give them the best possible care they can receive. In addition to medication management, he incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) along with culturally sensitive, emotionally focused, faith-based, patient-centered techniques into his patient's treatment.
Life is hard. And the reason that Robb is the best provider to help you is that he has not only lived through life's tough challenges, but he has also learned what it means to listen when others are experiencing them. Robb has spent the last 4 years treating patients struggling with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, PTSD, occupationally-related stress, phobias, faith struggles, sudden states of panic, and even very intense schizophrenia in people of all ages and all walks of life. When in a session with Robb, you will not feel judged, you will not feel embarrassed, and you will not feel stupid; but most importantly you will feel like you are being heard. Robb's goal from session number one is to make you feel like you have found a real support person to help you meet whatever challenge you have in front of you. You have come to Thriveworks today because you are facing problems that you do not believe you can face on your own. It won't be difficult, and it won't be nerve-wracking. Thriveworks follows a specific process to verify your insurance coverage for mental health services:
1. When you book an appointment, you’ll be asked to provide your current insurance information. This can be done online or over the phone.
2. Thriveworks will attempt to verify your benefits on your behalf. We use this information to confirm that you are active with your insurance and estimate your coverage and potential out-of-pocket costs.
3. While Thriveworks verifies your provider is in-network before your appointment, we do not handle pre-authorization requests. Some insurance plans require advance approval for certain treatments. If this applies to you, you’ll need to contact your insurance company directly.

Thriveworks accepts a wide range of insurance plans for various mental health services, including but not limited to:

Yes, to get a personal price estimate, you can:
1. Call us directly to discuss your specific situation and get detailed pricing information. 2. Check the profile of a specific clinician on our website, which lists their exact self-pay rates for a first (intake) session and subsequent sessions.
If using insurance, many clients only pay a co-pay ranging from $0 to $55 per session. The exact amount depends on your plan’s specific benefits.
To avoid any surprise costs, we recommend calling your insurance to ask “Do I need approval before starting therapy?” Some plans require this approval in advance (called pre-authorization), and we can’t get it for you.
It depends on your specific insurance plan. Coverage for prescription medications is separate from the coverage for psychiatric services, so we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask about your prescription drug benefits. Inquire about any co-pays or deductibles that may apply to psychiatric medications, as well as any restrictions or prior authorization requirements.
