I believe that everyone deserves to be known beyond their diagnosis, and I work collaboratively with clients to help them rediscover their strengths and build the life they want.
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker with experience in community mental health, trauma treatment, and addiction recovery. I primarily work with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, relationship difficulties, and life stressors. Many of the people I work with are tired of simply surviving and want to better understand themselves, break unhealthy patterns, and build more fulfilling lives. I believe healing happens through genuine connection, and I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where lasting change can occur.
My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to each person’s needs. I utilize evidence-based practices including CBT, EMDR, ERP, and Internal Family Systems to help clients heal from trauma, manage anxiety and OCD, improve relationships, and develop healthier patterns that support lasting change.
Life can be difficult, but you do not have to face it alone. Whatever you are carrying, I believe healing and growth are possible. If you are ready to take the next step, I would be honored to walk alongside you and support you in creating the life you want.

I am a Christian, with a God centered therapeutic approach to dealing with the realities of life, I have a passion to assist individuals on their life journey of aligning their plans with the plans God has for them.
My name is Dr. Payton Jackson III. I am a licensed clinical social worker and hold a doctorate in education. I have 31 years of experience in the fields of social work and education. I have worked with family counseling, individual counseling, individuals in substance abuse recovery, youth ages 14 to 18, and as a counselor, dean of students, assistant principal, and principal in high schools. These experiences have taught me that life's challenges are ongoing, and I believe that we are not designed to deal with life's journey on our own. I enjoy working with people to overcome these challenges.
My client-centered and strength-based approaches provide assistance to individuals in dealing with life's expectancies, both planned and unplanned. Self-empowerment and an understanding of what can be controlled and what cannot is essential. Working in step and together in a therapeutic relationship can make a positive difference in this journey.
You are not alone! The pathway of being the best person for yourself is real. Life and all it has to offer will definitely show up during this journey. You have the ability to overcome and thrive in the midst of this walk. Let's work together to have the best experiences possible on our life's journey, stay encouraged, and make an appointment with me.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Grand Rapids, MI is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:
Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Grand Rapids, MI work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.
Do you and your spouse spend a lot of time arguing? Does each passing year mark a furtherance from one another or a deepening connection? Do you feel more like you’re playing on either side of the tennis net instead of on the same side, working together?
Marriage can either be an incredibly nourishing aspect of your life, or it can tear you apart. Or worse — it can make you feel completely numb. You should expect your relationship to move you forward in life, not pull you back from what you really want. If you feel like your relationship is more curse than blessing, then it’s time we sit down for a talk and see what can be done.
Perhaps you don’t have any major issues with your spouse, but want an even deeper connection. In either case (the “better” or the “worse”), Thriveworks Grand Rapids Marriage Counseling is here to help. Your marriage can thrive. We can help make sure that it does. It’s what we’re here for.
How do did you spouse go from being your soulmate to becoming your archnemesis? It’s a fair question, and deserves immediate attention. During all the exciting first dates, hand holding, laughing, affectionate moments and perhaps even into raising children, it’s easy to lose sight of why you got on this crazy ride in the first place. If it wasn’t to make each others’ lives better and if you’re not continually working on making each others’ lives better, then there’s a problem.
That problem, more often than not, is that two seemingly well-intentioned people signed a “Till death to us part” contract before even understanding what kind of commitment that really is, much less even the kind of open communication that requires.
No, we can’t set back the clocks and start over again, but what we can do is take some time to acknowledge where things are right now — in the full and brutal objectivity of true honesty — and figure out where to go from here. There are many causes that could bring a couple to the point where they don’t want to spend another second with one another, let alone the better part of their lives, when there is so much pain and hurt. We will talk about the causality, sure. It’s important. But what’s even more important is what do we do know with the information and experiences we now have.
You may discuss the following in marriage counseling:
Our counselors and coaches are leaders in the field. At Thriveworks Grand Rapids, Forest Hills Marriage Counseling, we are part of an ever-growing, national network of mental health practitioners who aim to provide the best therapy service possible. We have worked with couples of all kinds: Those just getting started on their path and others who have been married for decades. Couples that are still drooling over each other on a daily basis, and others that want to buy a plane ticket and some hair dye.
Really, we’ve seen it all. There’s no scenario you can present to us that you should feel the need to be embarrassed about. Furthermore, our depth of experience in working with other couples means that we have the knowledge that it takes to know what works and what doesn’t, depending on what you’re going through, where you’ve been and who you both are as individuals. Our sessions will be tailored to your needs, and won’t follow a simplistic guidebook.
We want you to be able to start moving on a better path as soon as possible, which is why we can often get new clients in for their first session within the same week as scheduling. Let’s do this thing. Whether things are fairly happy or fairly heated, we are here to help. Your marriage should bring your fulfillment and joy.
