What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Ashley: Online therapy works exactly like therapy in the office! We start with an assessment to figure out what your goals are and then we decide together where to go from there in terms of what we discuss and what strategies will be most helpful.

Winter:

  • Benefit in online counseling because in a technical world; there is a longing in connection and being understood.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Ashley: Just like therapy that takes place in an office setting, we can discuss tools related to any ailment you might be facing! DBT, CBT, and even EMDR can be conducted virtually!

Winter: Mindfulness, CBT, and EMDR resources to help others gain an awareness of how they feeling/what they are thinking; to help change their perception and get a relief from what they are struggling with. They can learn self soothing tools to use on their own in between sessions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Ashley: I know clients are making meaningful progress in online therapy when they tell me! I reference back to the goals you told me you wanted to work towards during our first session and get your feedback on how you feel you've been doing in those areas from time to time. Sometimes I even have clients take questionnaires to help them gauge and monitor their symptoms.

Winter: I see a light bulb come on; they gain an insight that they have never seen before.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Ashley: Clients can get the most out of their therapy experience by engaging with recommendations discussed during session, which can range from researching topics we talk about, listening to/reading books or articles about things we discuss, practicing recommended coping skills, and of course doing your best to engage in healthy sleeping and eating habits.

Winter: They can journal out thoughts/feelings, and use soothing techniques to help ease the emotion. Clients are also very resourceful and seek some resources on their own.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Ashley: To prepare for your first online therapy session, you will want to make sure your internet connection is stable, that you are inside the state lines of where you live, and that you have a private place to have your session where no one else will be coming in and out of the room. Make sure you have a list of any medications and dosages you are taking, and come prepared to talk about what's troubling you, what your goals are, and do your best to be as open and honest as possible in regard to answering any background information asked of you.

Winter: Learn the online format like zoom; make sure you have no distractions and come ready to heal.

Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. How to Upkeep Your Mental Health from Home

Online Counseling is a fantastic tool to use to upkeep your mental health, but it is just one in many. Our counselors suggest doing a little something every day to keep your mental state healthy and happy. A few things you can do in quarantine include:

  • Limit the time you watch or read the news: Three, 10-minute sessions from a reputable news source is plenty of time to get caught up on what is going on in the world and locally. Don’t peek outside of those times! Also, sometimes it can help to let all your anxious thoughts flood free during this time. Give your mind complete acceptance to run free. Of course, the most important step after this is to close the news app. Try to go back to thinking rationally and do something that soothes you. Easier said than done, we know. But it is possible, sometimes we just need a little support.
  • Keep up those healthy habits: Yoga, getting outside, at-home workouts (have you looked at Pinterest’s many suggestions for this?), and trying new meals are great ways to break up the monotony and take care of your physical health, which will always help your mental health.
  • Try something new: Yes, those Netflix shows are calling your name. It’s easy to fall into the same routine. Trying something new is a great way to stimulate underused parts of your brain. Bake an extreme cake, try that woodworking project, or learn how to grow indoor plants!
