I have spent years walking alongside individuals and families in their most vulnerable moments, and that work taught me that people deserve to be truly seen, not just helped.
I am Mallory, a licensed social worker and therapist with a Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) and a Doctor of Social Work (D.S.W.). My path into this work was shaped by a genuine belief that every person deserves compassionate, individualized care—and that the therapeutic relationship itself is one of the most powerful vehicles for change. I've worked across clinical, educational, and community-based settings, which has deepened my understanding of the social, structural, and personal forces that shape mental health.
My practice is grounded in evidence-based frameworks, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and motivational interviewing. I don't believe in one-size-fits-all therapy—I tailor my work to what each client actually needs, drawing on both advanced clinical training and years of close listening.
Whether you're in the depths of a depressive episode, exhausted by anxiety, learning to live with a bipolar diagnosis, or simply carrying more than you should have to carry alone—you deserve support that takes you seriously. When you're ready, I hope you'll reach out and schedule an appointment. That first step is often the hardest, and I'll meet you there.

My go-to approach for helping children in therapy is to use the attachment model and play model. This allows children to more easily access their emotions without the pain that is blocking it and provides parents with the education, understanding, and skills that are required in order to help their children process the pain they are dealing with.
I teach children breathing and regulation skills in order to help them connect to their bodies. I help them practice expressing their emotions in several different ways, including using verbal and non-verbal communication. I also provide education and regulation skills for the parents in order to give them tools to best serve their children and find ways to connect with them in a supportive and understanding way.
I know a client is making progress in child therapy when the child becomes more expressive. The child may also be opening up more, showing age-appropriate behaviors again, is excelling in other areas of their life, and connecting more with their adult caregivers.
Parents can practice the tools that are given and work on spending more time with their children outside of therapy in a positive way, playing and interacting to create more positive connections.
The best thing to do to prepare for child therapy is get ready to do some work as a parent, as well as be patient, especially when children need to express things non-verbally.
Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child therapy at Thriveworks Albuquerque.
Child therapy works by using multiple techniques tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Albuquerque, NM have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.
Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors, or what they might need in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.
It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.
Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Albuquerque, NM is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.
Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay.
