What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

I find that CBT is a great universal approach that can be used to increase a client's awareness of their internal and external experience and how they impact their levels of functioning. Collaboration is also helpful when it is focused on helping them feel empowered to be agents of change for what they need or want in their lives.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Recognizing emotions on the feelings wheel
  • Learning about the cognitive triangle, hierarchy of needs, and stages of life
  • Coping skills and strategies for managing and regulating emotions and stress
  • How to recognize, challenge, and reframe cognitive distortions, otherwise known as automatic negative thoughts
  • Addressing barriers to change by cultivating awareness and mindfulness
  • Learning communication skills to be able to express what they feel, how to advocate for their needs with the people in their lives, and how to take appropriate pauses and respond rather than react
  • Breathing exercises
  • Processing journaling
  • The use of calendars, schedules, and routines
  • Reality-checking fears and anxieties
  • Cognitive restructuring

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

I can tell a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are able to come back session after session and confidently report and process their ability to use skills, strategies, and routines they have been working on in treatment. Also, when they are using terminology they learn and demonstrate increased awareness and ability to utilize skills to regulate and manage whatever they are there working on in treatment goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

I encourage clients to supplement their work in individual therapy with positive, healthy, and effective activities, or what we refer to as pleasant events, utilizing them in their daily lives and establishing routines to help them feel they are making progress towards a life worth living. Also, discussing activities, practices, routines, and habits that provide life satisfaction and help them feel like they are working toward long-term life goals. We will often look at a balanced life wheel that I have been known to share.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

I encourage clients to prepare for their first individual session by thinking about the areas of their life they hope treatment can help address what they are experiencing, problems they are facing, and future goals in their life they want to work toward. Create a list of your goals.

Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

How much does individual therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. I want to start off by saying that my two counselors I had were great, but the thrive works Business model is lacking a care for its clients. I had my heat go out and I missed my session because I was working for eight hours straight on it and was told that I shouldn’t have been working on my heat and made my appointment because it’s more important than my family. Will not recommend, and I had a horrible experience with Thrive works as a business model but again my two counselors were wonderful. I got nothing but respect for them.
