My go-to approach for treating depression is acceptance and commitment therapy. I enjoy the treatment model because it incorporates so many useful elements of insight development, mindfulness, and development and adherence to values.
When working with depression, I teach skills around mindfulness, defusion skills, distress tolerance, behavioral activation, recognition of cognitive distortions, and interrupting thought loops.
I know when a client is making meaningful progress when they report improved scores on depression screening surveys; tell me that the frequency, intensity, and/or duration of their depressive symptoms have improved; report finding enjoyment of various aspects of life returning; and they feel more hopeful.
Clients can supplement their learning through various recommended readings/audiobook, listening to podcasts, journaling, exercise, and improving their quality of sleep.
To prepare for your first session, think about the various areas you have been struggling in and come into the conversation with a willingness to be as honest as possible. The first session is usually focused on me getting a better understanding of the scope of your challenges and some of the background contributing problems. Don't be afraid to ask me questions!
