What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive therapy. I find the best benefit in cognitive therapy because our thoughts are connected to our moods and behaviors. When we are depressed, we tend to have negative thoughts about ourselves (self-criticism), our experiences (pessimism), and our future (hopelessness).

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Cognitive therapy – a technique used to teach people how to identify, test, and perhaps change their negative thoughts by reviewing all the information in their lives — positive and neutral as well as negative — thus learning how to think in more adaptive ways to reduce one’s depression.
  • Behavioral activation – a technique that teaches people to increase the number of pleasant activities that they do each day. Generally, we receive the largest boosts in our moods from activities that bring us pleasure, a sense of accomplishment, or those that are most connected to our values.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are able to report an increased interest in regular activities, decreased apathy and/or anhedonia, and a reduction in feelings of sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by tracking their activities and feelings of depression. They might discover that they are less active when they are most depressed. Afterward, they can increase their engagement in activities that are most pleasurable, lead to a sense of accomplishment, help us approach rather than avoid things, or reflect their values.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can prepare a list of therapeutic goals you would like to work toward over the course of therapy.
