What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My approach to helping individuals in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is to review their treatment goals and help formulate realistic expectations prior to starting. I prefer engaging in this discussion before making any recommendations, as this helps to ensure informed decision-making for optimal growth and positive well-being.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

When researching a DBT therapist, one should look for the following skills training:

  • Mindfulness: Skills for increasing present-moment self-awareness.
  • Distress tolerance: Skills for decreasing the intensity of a disturbance.
  • Emotional regulation: Learning how to self-regulate to choose an appropriate response.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: Skills for interacting and communicating more effectively and efficiently with others.
These skills are most beneficial once comfortability is established with the prior three training categories, as skills “build” upon one another.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

Determining when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy should be a collaborative and ongoing process between the client and therapist. As we each heal and grow in our own respective time frames, regular progress “check-ins” should be a part of the therapeutic alliance to promote both autonomy and independence. This will help to provide structure for future direction, as well as afford the opportunity for reevaluation of treatment goals, if deemed necessary and/or appropriate.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in dialectical behavior therapy with ongoing skills training outside of meetings. One key component to using coping skills is to practice them even when they're not needed. This helps to reinforce muscle memory so that when the skill is needed, implementation is not as difficult, as we have switched into an “auto-pilot mode. Regular use of a skill diary and/or DBT flashcards can also be incredibly helpful.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

To prepare for your first DBT session, making a list of goals and areas of concern for personal improvement, as well as identification of the friends and/or family members involved, can be most advantageous. This can help build a healthy foundation for trust in the therapeutic relationship, as well as provide a supportive environment for the exploration of self-expression and self-advocacy.

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in Orlando, FL is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

Yeah, therapy is subjective so it's hard to rate a company based on one therapist encounter but I do have to include the company overall because it's essential to my comprehensive review. My therapist tried, was friendly and accommodating but just didn't work for me. The company overall is disjointed and maybe a little too big for proper management. You call a central number to get set up but when it comes to quitting the therapist it is up to you as the patient to do it all. Any attempt to log into the site gets redirected to an email link. The latest CSR I had unfortunately had a thick accent and was not really listening to me and my responses.

Hi I was a prior supervisor for Margaret in California where she did her post degree internship. She was a very skilled clinician who had many kids that were high-risk and lived in low-income families. Her relationship and interactive approach was very successful with these children and families. I was impressed with her skill and abilities. I would highly recommend her. Vicci
