What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). I find the most benefit in CBT and DBT because they are evidence-based treatments that are proven to help treat and reduce symptoms of depression. These approaches also can help reduce symptoms of anxiety and help an individual gain tools to help with interpersonal conflicts.

My go-to approach for treating depression is providing a safe and empathetic space to process those thoughts and feelings leading to depression. Once we have processed them together, we can start doing the healing work in cognitive reframing, where we learn to challenge those thoughts. I see the best benefit in CBT and person-centered therapy because you will not feel alone in this process but rather empowered.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I use the following tools with someone in counseling to navigate depression: cognitive restructuring or reframing (identifying the negativing thinking patterns and reframing these in the moment they happen in), emotion identification and regulation (identifying emotions and learning how to cope when feeling those ways), distress tolerance (learning healthy ways to cope during a stressful situation), journaling and thought records (keeping a log of thinking patterns), behavior activation (doing activities that increase interaction and/or healthy movement), relaxation/mindfulness or stress reduction exercises, and more!

I teach the following tools in depression counseling: mindfulness, relaxation/deep breathing, addressing trauma, cognitive reframing, and radical acceptance.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know when a client is making meaningful progress in reducing symptoms of depression when they are utilizing some of the tools that we learned in therapy at home or on a daily basis and/or report a reduction in symptoms of depression.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when a client tells me they are engaging in an activity that they have been wanting to do for a long but could not due to their depression.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in counseling with doing healthy activities and utilizing their healthy coping skills as well as using the tools that we learn together during therapy.

Clients can supplement their in time in depression counseling with brief 20-minute daily exercise, spending time outdoors, and limiting their time in stressful environments.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first counseling session, you can write down a list of goals you might have for therapy, symptoms you may be experiencing, or what is bringing you to counseling.

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can be kind and graceful with yourself, as this is not about being flawed.

Diagnoses of Depression and Anxiety: Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are both serious mental illnesses, characterized by specific symptoms that can prove to impact an individual’s life in more ways than one. Common symptoms of depression include:

  • Persistent feeling of sadness
  • Hopelessness
  • Loss of pleasure in once loved activities
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Social isolation
  • Fatigue
  • Changes in weight
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lack of concentration

One person might experience a handful of the above depression symptoms, while another person might experience a separate set of the above depression symptoms. Now, common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Racing or unwanted thoughts
  • Excessive worry
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Lack of concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Sweating
  • Feeling of impending doom

Again, the exact symptoms one experience can vary from person to person. However, all of the aforementioned can prove very harmful to one’s health. The diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety involves answering questions to identify the key symptoms an individual is experiencing. Once the symptoms have been identified, the doctor will then seek to provide the most appropriate diagnosis. There are unfortunately no simple blood tests or physical examinations that can identify these disorders in an easy and straightforward manner. The patient can be in perfect physical health and yet be suffering from complex mental problems.

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): IPT focuses on improving relationships and resolving conflicts, addressing underlying issues contributing to anxiety and depression.

Yeah, therapy is subjective so it's hard to rate a company based on one therapist encounter but I do have to include the company overall because it's essential to my comprehensive review. My therapist tried, was friendly and accommodating but just didn't work for me. The company overall is disjointed and maybe a little too big for proper management. You call a central number to get set up but when it comes to quitting the therapist it is up to you as the patient to do it all. Any attempt to log into the site gets redirected to an email link. The latest CSR I had unfortunately had a thick accent and was not really listening to me and my responses.

Hi I was a prior supervisor for Margaret in California where she did her post degree internship. She was a very skilled clinician who had many kids that were high-risk and lived in low-income families. Her relationship and interactive approach was very successful with these children and families. I was impressed with her skill and abilities. I would highly recommend her. Vicci
