What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My preferred approach for couples/marriage counseling is Gottman therapy. It's a research-based approach aimed at helping partners build and maintain healthy, long-lasting relationships.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling when using Gottman therapy:

  • Assessment: A comprehensive evaluation of the couple's relationship, including communication patterns, conflict resolution strategies, friendship, intimacy, and shared goals.
  • The Sound Relationship House: Consists of 9 components essential for a successful relationship, including trust, commitment, conflict management, shared meaning, and emotional connection.
  • The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: Identifies four destructive communication patterns, including criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

In Gottman therapy, meaningful progress in couples or marriage counseling can be assessed through various indicators reflecting positive relationship changes such as a decrease in negative interaction patterns, an increase in positive interaction patterns, improved conflict resolution, enhanced friendship and intimacy, development of rituals and shared meaning, building trust and commitment, application of skills outside of therapy, and increased satisfaction and happiness.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Couples are often given homework assignments to practice the skills learned in therapy outside of sessions. These assignments may involve engaging in structured conversations, practicing relaxation techniques, or implementing strategies for building emotional connections.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Preparing for couples/marriage therapy can help you maximize your treatment experience. I would suggest that you:

  • Reflect on your goals: What are you looking to achieve in therapy?
  • Research therapists: Find a good fit for you.
  • Prepare questions: Write down any questions or concerns you have about starting.
  • Set realistic expectations: Therapy is a collaborative process that takes time and effort.
  • Open mindset: Be honest and transparent with your therapist about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
  • Be patient with yourself: Seeking therapy is a positive step toward improving your mental health.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Giving everything you have to a relationship, in good times and bad, often means asking for help. Thriveworks Jacksonville offers couples therapy, and our therapists, counselors, and psychologists have provided that safe space for many partners. We have worked with couples who are experiencing the strain and drama of being in a relationship, and our professionals have helped them find a better place, both as individuals and as a couple. How Can Couples Therapy Help? Common Relationship Issues

When couples struggle, it is easy to think that they are the only partners who are facing that particular issue, but many challenges that strain relationships are common. Couples are rarely alone in their struggle. Many other partners have and are facing the same difficulty. When partners walk into couples therapy together, more than likely, their couples therapist has helped other partners who have faced the same issue, challenges like…

  • Conflicting Goals
  • Difficulty with Intimacy
  • Lack of trust
  • Communication Trouble
  • Disagreements about Family

What Might Happen at Couples Therapy?

These common relational problems are also opportunities for partners to grow individually and for their relationship to improve. Although growth and change are rarely easy tasks, they are usually worth the pain, and no couple has to face the growth process alone. Couples therapists are often able to guide the process of relational improvement by…

  • Guiding a reasonable timeline for change. Certain behaviors are more toxic than others. Some changes need to be made now for the health of each partner and the relationship. Other changes can wait. Experienced couples therapists may be able to help partners know which adjustments to prioritize.
  • Maintaining a neutral space for discussion. The natural trajectory of any conflict is to escalate. However, when conflict escalates, partners tend to attack each other instead of the problem. Skilled couples therapists may be able to keep the tone of conflict neutral and help partners solve the problem.

Their billing is horrible. I signed a payment agreement and they did not honour it. They charged my card for way more than the agreed amount making my account go negative. Cancelled all my appointment and wont be using this service again.

I’m 3 times better, because of the instructions and medication. I never was a medicine, trusting person. But after seeing my Psychiatrist, and him explaining the benefits, I trusted the process. And thank God I did.!

I’ve been dealing with a few stressers before reaching out for help in the psychology space. I reached out mainly because the pain being caused in my relationship. Sarah welcomed me into her network here with such professionalism I felt instantly comfortable with having open and candid conversation. Since then my life has gone through and still going through major changes some good and some bad. I would like Thriveworks and Sarah know that this couldn’t have been a better time for someone like Sarah to open her door for me and coach me through some of things I’ve been going thru and point me in the right direction of how to be the best version of a person I can be. You can tell she is passionate about her work and cares deeply for clients like myself. If there’s ever a time where someone I know needs to talk to someone I will recommend Thriveworks and specifically Sarah if it’s possible. Sarah, keep up the good work. You’re making a positive difference in my life.

I have been so well taken care of with Thriveworks! From the efficient sign-up process, to my outstanding therapist, Vanessa Cumber. Vanessa takes the time to really understand the big events in my life. She helps me reflect, review and challenge my own views about things, when I go to a negative place and get stuck there. Vanessa helps me get to the bottom of why I am so hard on myself. She is teaching me to become my own strongest advocate, instead of staying in my default, of harshest critic. Vanessa has the patience and fortitude of a Saint. I am truly blessed by her, and everyone at Thriveworks! You all are making the world a kinder place!
