What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is a person-centered approach. I enjoy this approach, along with others, as it helps create a unique and genuine experience with each individual. I want my client to feel heard, supported, and encouraged to use their own abilities and strengths to take control of their lives and make meaningful changes.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive restructuring: Helping clients identify and challenge negative thought patterns.
  • Behavioral activation: Encouraging clients to engage in activities that improve their mood.
  • Mindfulness meditation: Teaching clients to focus on the present moment without judgment.
  • Deep breathing exercises: Techniques to help reduce stress and promote relaxation.
  • Identifying and labeling emotions: Helping clients become aware of their emotional states.
  • Effective communication: Teaching assertiveness and active listening skills.
  • Boundary setting: Helping clients establish and maintain healthy boundaries in relationships.
  • Conflict resolution: Strategies to manage and resolve conflicts constructively.
  • Journaling: Encouraging clients to keep a journal to track thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
  • Providing information: Educating clients about their specific mental health issues, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Resource sharing: Offering articles, videos, and other educational materials relevant to the client's needs.
  • SMART goals: Helping clients set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals.
  • Action plans: Creating step-by-step plans to achieve short-term and long-term goals.
  • Anxiety management: Techniques such as grounding exercises and worry time.
  • Depression management: Strategies like activity scheduling and positive reinforcement.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they report fewer episodes of anxiety, depression, or other symptoms, and when symptoms do occur, they are less intense. Also, meaningful progress is noted when the client is achieving their goals, has better emotional stability, effectively uses coping strategies and therapeutic techniques learned in therapy, and has an increased sense of self-awareness and insight, to name a few.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by reading books and/or workbooks relevant to their issues, using apps to track their mood and/or thought record diary, journaling, practicing mindfulness activities, getting regular exercise, participating in creative outlets, and practicing coping strategies and techniques learned in therapy sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can find a quiet, comfortable, and secure space; have a stable internet connection and familiarize yourself with Zoom; reduce distractions as much as possible; keep a pen and notebook handy for notes; think about the specific issues or topics you want to discuss and goals for yourself; and understand that the first session is usually an intake to discuss your background and goals for therapy so we might not dive into therapy right away.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What Is Online Counseling? How Can It Help Me?

We’ve already explained the basics, but to delve in further online counseling is the more convenient alternative to traditional in-person counseling, allowing you to use your internet device’s web camera to interact and talk confidentially with your therapist.

Online Counseling Benefits: What Are They?

Time and time again, people find that online counseling is the beneficial mental health service they’ve been searching for. It can prove especially effective if you’re working with a super busy, tight schedule or you’d simply prefer a more convenient counseling option. Let’s talk a little bit about some benefits that are specific to online counseling:

  1. It’s convenient and comfortable: People refer to online counseling as the “convenient and comfortable” alternative to in-person counseling. Why? Because you get to attend your counseling sessions from home. How much more convenient and comfortable can you get?
  2. It’s just as effective: Online counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling, too. Research shows that people find it just as beneficial. That said, some people find that online counseling just isn’t working for them and that they prefer in-person counseling. That’s okay too! But you’ll never know until you try it, will you?
  3. It’s a reliable service: To round out the list of benefits, online counseling is a reliable mental health service too. You don’t have to worry about canceling (or rescheduling) your counseling session because you’ve hit traffic or you don’t want to leave your house in the middle of a storm. Online counseling removes these potential problems from the equation.

Thriveworks Cedar Park, TX is more than happy to help people conquer their challenges and improve their overall mental health. If you see the value that you could find in online counseling, just call Thriveworks Cedar Park at (512) 842-5168.

Susan is a compassionate, inspirational, and insightfull therapist. She helped me through the toughest moments of my life and taught me techniques to enjoy living, rather than just scraping by. It seems like a lot of therapists are leaving this location recently. Susan is the best, my quality of life has dramatically improved with her guidance. I strongly recommend her to anyone in need.
