What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

Navigating grief and loss is a deeply personal journey, and my goal as a therapist is to walk alongside you, offering support and guidance tailored to your unique needs. My go-to approach focuses on helping you embrace your emotions, not suppress them.Grief is a normal, albeit painful, human experience. I believe in validating your reactions and normalizing the spectrum of feelings you might be experiencing. By recognizing this, we can then explore healthy ways to navigate these emotions, differentiating between helpful and unhelpful coping mechanisms. This empowers you to choose how you react, even when you can't control what you're feeling. We'll also explore building a strong support network, recognizing that therapy is a crucial part of that circle but shouldn't stand alone.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

Grief's journey is unique for everyone, so my toolbox overflows with diverse tools to empower you. Here are a few highlights:

  • Harnessing connection: You're never alone in grief. I aim to help you tap into the supportive arms of your community and loved ones, fostering a safety net of understanding and shared experience.
  • Mindful self-care: Just like tending a garden, self-care nourishes your emotional well-being. We explore mindfulness practices, from calming breaths to soothing rituals, that nurture your spirit during challenging times.
  • Embracing acceptance: Radical acceptance doesn't mean condoning the loss, but acknowledging its reality with compassion. We explore techniques to soften resistance and create space within our lives for healing.
  • Managing distress: Grief often brings waves of difficult emotions. I aim to equip you with distress tolerance tools, like grounding techniques and healthy coping mechanisms, to navigate these waves with greater ease.
  • Shifting perspectives: Sometimes, changing how we view our experiences can shift our emotional responses or heal us in ways that can empower us for the tough battles ahead. We explore different lenses to understand your grief, empowering you to choose mindful reactions to your feelings.
Remember, these are just a glimpse into the tools I offer. Together, we'll tailor a unique set to guide you through your grief journey, step by compassionate step.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

Witnessing a client's progress through grief is a privilege and a joy. While there's no one-size-fits-all marker, here are some signs I see on the journey:

  • Reclaiming daily life: Grief's grip loosens when clients navigate their days without being consumed by it. They can express their emotions healthily, but their overall functioning isn't hindered.
  • Empowerment through choice: Progress becomes evident when clients shift from passive observers of their grief to active participants in their healing. They choose their reactions, reclaiming control and agency over their lives.
  • Shifting focus: The pain doesn't vanish, but its constant presence diminishes slowly over time. Clients gradually find space for other thoughts and experiences, aligning their lives with their values even amidst grief.
Remember, healing is not linear. Grief may ebb and flow but, when these moments appear, healing means starting to feel like you're on the right path.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Healing after loss takes time and support, and therapy is just one piece of the puzzle. Here are some ways you can complement your grief journey outside of our sessions:

  • Listen to your body: Your physical sensations and gut reactions hold wisdom. Take time to connect with them through mindfulness practices or journaling. Identify your needs – rest, connection, or creative expression – and prioritize them.
  • Lean on your village: Don't isolate yourself. Reach out to loved ones, support groups, or online communities. Sharing your grief can lighten the burden and offer new perspectives.
  • Nourish your spirit: Self-care isn't selfish, it's essential. Schedule time for activities that bring you comfort and joy, even when it feels hard. A walk in nature, a warm bath, or a creative pursuit can uplift your spirit.
  • Be honest with yourself: Bottling up emotions can hinder healing. Acknowledge your feelings, even the uncomfortable ones. Journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or expressing yourself creatively can help you process your grief.
  • Remember that progress isn't linear: There will be good days and bad days. Celebrate the victories, big and small, and be kind to yourself on the tough ones. You've already overcome so much, and I'm here to support you as you learn to not just survive, but thrive in the face of your loss.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

Starting grief counseling can feel daunting, but remember, you're not alone. Here are some thoughts to help you prepare for your first session:

  • Embrace your unique journey: Grief looks different for everyone. There's no right or wrong way to feel, and some days will be harder than others. That's okay. Be kind to yourself.
  • Openness is key: Healing starts with acknowledging your emotions, even the painful ones. Don't judge yourself for feeling overwhelmed or lost. Expressing your feelings isn't a weakness, it's a strength and a crucial part of the healing process.
  • Grief is love's echo: The intensity of your grief reflects the depth of your love. Remember, acknowledging your pain is honoring the love you shared with your loved one.
  • Come ready to talk: While there's no need to prepare a script, jotting down thoughts or questions beforehand can help guide the conversation.
  • Remember, you're not alone: Therapy provides a safe space to explore your grief without judgment. I'm here to listen, support, and guide you on your journey towards healing.

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Newark, NJ have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Newark, NJ will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
