What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in individual online therapy is an eclectic approach. I find the best benefit of an eclectic approach is the flexibility it provides me to adjust to each individual client’s needs. Each person has a unique experience and upbringing. I pull tools from CBT, TF-CBT, DBT, positive psychology, trauma-informed care, and solution-focused therapies to help clients achieve their goals.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Emotion regulation and distress tolerance via mindfulness practice, videos, and worksheets. I work with client to attune to their bodies physically, emotionally, and mentally so they can build insight and confidence in being able to redirect symptoms.
  • Self-care tools to reinforce emotion regulation skills.
  • Cognitive challenging/reframing/refocusing via the use of cognitive triangles and understanding unhelpful thinking patterns. I encourage clients to use worksheets/handouts to practice their skills daily and build new habits.
  • Exploration of their personal values, where they come from, and how they impact their daily lives.
  • Healthy communication skills to create positive/supportive relationships, advocate for needs, and improve conflict management skills.
  • Healthy boundary-setting skills that fit within the client’s personal values.
  • Positive self-affirmation to improve self-worth and confidence.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they can report reduced symptoms and express confidence in being able to navigate their emotions, thoughts, and reactions during times of distress. I also look for a client’s understanding and knowledge of the skills being used. If a client can demonstrate and teach the skill in session, and report feeling personal balance or achievement towards their goals, the client is making meaningful progress. A client can also make meaningful progress by demonstrating vulnerability, and openness to explore their own life (history, personal reactions, etc.)

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with daily skills practice or reflections. I try to make a habit of giving my clients small, manageable tasks to practice each day. I spend time with my clients to build these tasks into their current habits or routines to help establish a new pattern/healthy habit.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

A first online therapy session can come with so many different emotions. To prepare for a first session, I recommend that you test out whatever device you plan to use in the location you will be logging in from. Be sure to also use Zoom's “test your microphone and speaker” option to ensure that you are connected to the right devices for sound. I will ask about a lot of different areas in a person’s life to get to know them and understand how they view the world and others around them. It’s important to share as much information as honestly as possible, but my first priority will always be my client’s safety and comfort level. If I ask a tough question, I don’t expect anyone to share every detail — just what they are willing and able to do. I encourage my clients to always ask me questions in return because I want my clients to get to know me and feel safe/comfortable. Therapy is most effective when a person can connect with their therapist. You can prepare for therapy further by thinking about your top 2-3 goals, or what it is that you hope to gain from therapy. This helps me to create a more effective approach that fits your needs.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Emma was both excited and anxious about having her first baby. She always knew that she wanted to be a mother one day, but she also knew that it wasn’t a walk in the park. Her nerves grew and grew throughout her pregnancy. She hoped that they would disintegrate once her baby was finally born, but unfortunately, the opposite happened.

The week that followed Andrew’s birth was the most anxiety-ridden week yet. Emma couldn’t halt her worrying. She thought constantly about worst case scenarios, like:

  • What if Andrew suddenly can’t breathe while he is sleeping?
  • What if someone drops Andrew while they’re holding him?
  • What if Andrew swallows something deadly?
  • What if I fall asleep and don’t wake to Andrew’s cries?

Emma was determined not to let any of these scenarios come true. She never left Andrew’s sode, and even refused to let her husband watch him alone. And when it was time for bed, Emma slept at the foot of Andrew’s crib instead of in her own bed.

The good news is that Emma realized she had a problem with the help of her family. She talked to a counselor and understood that she was having postpartum anxiety. Her counselor saw her in weekly sessions to help her manage her postpartum anxiety and also referred her to a psychiatrist to begin anti-anxiety medication.

Online therapists help their clients tackle their given problems. They can bring mental health conditions to light and help one manage their symptoms. Online therapists can help many different people with a range of mental health issues.

If you think that you should talk to a counselor or might benefit from doing so, call Thriveworks Counseling in Houston, TX. Thriveworks offers online therapy and can get you connected with an online therapist right away.

Is Online Counseling an Effective Option? How Does It Work?

Many people wonder if online counseling is an effective counseling option, especially those who don’t have much experience with virtual care. The short answer is yes, online counseling is an effective counseling option. This is an alternative to face to face counseling, which enables clients to meet their therapist virtually instead of in-person.

At Thriveworks in Houston, TX, many of our clients prefer online care to in-person care, for the convenience and comfort, but also because they have found even greater progress working with their therapist virtually.

If you are interested in exploring online counseling services at Thriveworks in Houston, TX, you will have two main options available to you:

  1. Telephone sessions: Telephone sessions are simply held over the phone. Your Thriveworks online counselor will simply call you at the time of your scheduled appointment.
  2. Video sessions: Video sessions, on the other hand, are held over video chat! You will be sent a secure link before the time of your scheduled session, which you will then click on at the time of your appointment. Your Thriveworks online therapist will meet you there (and they look forward to it)!

Telephone and video sessions are both solid options for working with your counselor. They will supplement your mental health journey and allow you to make meaningful progress toward a happier, more successful life.

Your online counseling will design your treatment plan with your needs in mind. This means they’ll need to get to know you first and will have a few questions for you, like “What brought you into counseling?” and “What are your goals for yourself in counseling?”

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
