What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

My approach to helping people with grief and loss is meeting the client were they are at in their grief.

My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is to use the 5 Stages of Grief developed by Dr. Elizabeth Kubler Ross. I find the best benefit in this approach because I can target the stage the client is in presently, develop a treatment plan based on that stage, and then move forward.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

I teach the following tools in grief and loss therapy:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Understanding where the client's foundational thinking started, breaking down distorted thoughts, understanding automatic thoughts are not true, and changing negative thoughts to positive thoughts.
  • Mindfulness: Learning how to stay in the present moment by being mindful of your surroundings. This technique helps slow down the brain to eliminate racing thoughts and decrease anxious feelings.
  • Explaining the stages of grief: Helping the client identify which stage they are in, whether it be anger, bargaining, guilt, depression, denial, shock, or acceptance.

I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling. They are the 5 stages of grief:

  • Denial: The client does not believe their loved one has passed.
  • Anger: The client is angry at everyone or a higher power that this has happened.
  • Bargaining: The client wants to make a deal with the higher power. This is done to try to bring their loved one back.
  • Depression: The client experiences the loss profoundly and may not eat or sleep. Or the opposite may occur.
  • Acceptance: The client goes through the stages and finally accepts the loss.
I find out what stage the client is in and work through the stage with them.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief and loss therapy through client reports and hearing how the client is talking about the loss.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when they can show that they have moved through a stage and their actions have changed. For example, they start eating and sleeping again.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in grief and loss therapy by using material and listening to podcasts discussed in the session. The best supplement is practicing the tools the client learns in sessions and understanding it takes time to heal.

Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling by looking at YouTube videos I have selected for them and also filling out pre-selected worksheets on this topic. We can then discuss the videos and worksheets in a session.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for your first grief and loss session, you can remind yourself that this is the therapist's job: to help you to be open and honest.

To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, the client can write a short paragraph about what their recent experience has been about this loss, or they can create a short audio tape explaining what happened in their own words.

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in West Palm Beach, FL have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in West Palm Beach, FL will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.
