What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is to help them feel comfortable and welcome, even though we are not in the same room. I find the best benefit is finding a quiet space where they will not be interrupted.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I use CBT, DBT, and mindfulness techniques to help explore how our thoughts and feelings interlace with our behaviors.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they can share how a new coping strategy helped them through a tough situation.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with a daily check in of their emotions and engaging in self-care.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can think about what areas you would like to address during our time together.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What Is Online Therapy?

Online counseling is just as it sounds: it’s working with online therapists, or as some call them “internet therapists”. Instead of meeting with a therapist or counselor in-person, you have online therapy sessions. There are different ways to get therapy online, including:

  • Phone therapy: One option for online therapy is working with your therapist on the phone. Your therapist would simply call you at a scheduled time and you would have your session over the phone.
  • Video therapy: This is virtually the same as phone therapy—you’ll set up a day and time to work with your therapist in a video session.
  • Email therapy (or via chat): With email therapy, your therapist can help you via email. Instead of occurring at a scheduled time, this typically occurs over an extended period of time, just as emailing with or texting with a friend occurs over an extended period of time.

Online therapy is a great option for many people, such as those who don’t want to meet with their therapist in person, as well as those who don’t have the time to meet with their therapist in person. In the same breath, some people simply prefer online therapy counseling to in-person therapy because it’s more convenient. We’ll dive into these benefits below.

What Are the Benefits of Online Therapy?

As we mentioned above, online mental health therapy is a smart and convenient option for many people. There are several benefits to working with online therapists (or internet therapists), including:

  1. It’s convenient: For some people, it’s inconvenient and frustrating getting to their therapy appointment, due to their busy schedule or the traffic they hit along the way. Online therapy directly addresses this issue by allowing people to attend online therapy sessions.
  2. It’s more comfortable: In addition to being convenient, online therapy is also more comfortable for many people—in the literal and figurative sense. You can attend your online therapy session from your couch or even in bed. Also, many people feel more comfortable mentally and emotionally meeting with their therapist online versus in-person.
  3. It’s affordable: Many major insurance plans cover mental health services, including online therapy. Here at Thriveworks, we work with most major insurance plans and strive to offer affordable rates, to best help our clients.
  4. It’s flexible: Additionally, online therapy comes with a level of flexibility that most healthcare does not. You can quickly schedule an appointment because online therapy is so flexible and convenient, due to the fact that it’s conducted through the devices right in front of you and at the tips of your fingers.
  5. It’s effective: Last but not least, online therapy is effective. While it might not be the traditional approach to therapy, it’s just as effective as in-person therapy for many people.

Are you ready to experience these benefits? Consider online therapy at Thriveworks West Bloomfield. We are ready to meet you, on the phone, on video chat, or via email!
