What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples counseling begins with identifying their goals. I utilize an eclectic approach, including Gottman methods, to assist the couple in learning various tools to gain a better understanding of their own thoughts and emotions and approaches to communicate these with their partner. I prefer to let the clients identify their needs first (with assistance, if needed) and assist in educating them on tools for more effective communication. I enjoy teaching and supporting others to feel heard by their partner.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

In couples counseling, I teach clients how to:

  • Identify their own emotions and contributions to conflict
  • Hear their partner through mirroring, validation, and empathy
  • Communicate their own thoughts and emotions without defensiveness, judgment, or criticism
  • Gain more connection through friendship, intimacy, and defining various roles/symbols in the relationship

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

Clients will know they are making meaningful progress in couples counseling when they are able to utilize tools that they have learned in therapy in their day-to-day lives and have more confidence in navigating interactions and/or discussions since the onset of treatment.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy with journaling, self-reflection, and efforts to utilize tools outside of sessions. Identifying triggers or conflicts outside of a session can also be beneficial discussion topics for sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for their first couples counseling session, an individual can:

  • Identify the items they want to focus on
  • Identify their personal goal for therapy — i.e., what would create the belief that couples counseling was successful for you?

Starting Marriage counseling

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in The Woodlands, TX is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Marriage Counseling in The Woodlands, TX—Let Us Help You Improve Your Marriage

Over 2 million couples get married each year. That’s 2 million people who say their vows and promise to spend the rest of their lives together. On the other hand, around 800 thousand marriages come to an end each year when divorce is finalized. Instead of signing marriage certificates, they are signing divorce papers. But why do so many marriages split up? While that question is virtually impossible to answer because every situation is unique, there are some common patterns that couples go through. Poor communication, lack of trust, and no connection are three of the big ones. When the roads get rocky, it might be time to reach out for additional help.

Marriage counselors are experts who dedicate their work to helping couples work through the issues in their marriage. In addition, they help their clients improve communication, build trust, and strengthen their overall bond. If you and your spouse are struggling to see eye to eye or have a unique problem standing in the way of having a happy marriage, consider working with a marriage counselor at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, TX. We can help you get back on track. To get started, just give us a call and a scheduling specialist will help you set up an appointment.

Can Marriage Counseling Help Me and My Partner?

As we briefly touched on before, marriage counseling is designed to help couples with all different types of issues and concerns get back to a healthier relationship. No matter how long you’ve been together, therapy can work. Here is a list of common topics discussed in marriage therapy:

  • Parenting trouble
  • Mental illness such as anxiety and depression
  • Sexual or intimacy issues
  • Communication issues
  • Different visions for the future
  • Opposing values
  • Addiction or substance abuse
  • Jealousy
  • Financial strain or stress
  • Trust issues
  • Anger
  • Infidelity
  • Major life changes such as changing jobs, moving somewhere new, or losing a loved one

We can also help you address more problems than just in the list above. If you decide to work with a marriage counselor at Thriveworks in The Woodlands, they will help you tackle whatever issue you are having either through in-person or online counseling.

Marriage Counseling Benefits: How Can It Help?

The mental health professionals at our office are dedicated, highly trained, and experienced in helping spouses work through their problems and regain a deepened connection. Reaching out for the help of a professional is not admitting defeat. It’s acknowledging that there is a problem and wanting to fix it in order to, in some cases, stay together. You are showing just how much you care about your relationship and want things to work.

Admitting you need help isn’t always easy. Sometimes one partner or the other won’t be excited about going to therapy, and that’s okay. Sit down with them and discuss why you feel like this is the best decision for your relationship and what it means to you. Discuss these questions:

  1. Are we happy with the way our marriage is going right now?
  2. Do we communicate well, or could we use some work?
  3. Are we struggling to connect on an intimate level? Have we tried to change that already?
  4. Do we have opposing views of the future or goals we want to achieve?
  5. Do we feel fulfilled by our marriage?
  6. Are we supporting each other to the best of our abilities?
