What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approaches for helping people in therapy are acceptance and commitment therapy and Polyvagal theory. I prefer these two because of the focus on values and being able to move toward one's intended goal regardless of their emotional state. ACT also teaches that there are no such things as “good” or “bad” emotions. Polyvagal theory works within the nervous system to assist with emotional regulation. Utilizing these two approaches allows for more targeted and real-time assistance.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

There is a focus on self-care and challenging the thoughts and beliefs clients may have about themselves.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know that a client is making meaningful progress when they inform me of the changes made and display decreased emotional reactivity to the themes surrounding what brought them into therapy and have increased movement toward their intended goal.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can practice learned strategies in addition to checking out suggested supplemental information in between sessions to supplement their time in therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

One of the things I think would be helpful is for someone to know that it is okay for them to feel uncomfortable starting therapy and that it is not a “quick fix.”

Starting Depression counseling

What can counseling do for those who suffer with depression?

Is it worth going to therapy for depression?

It is absolutely worth going to therapy for depression — depression counseling helps people better manage their symptoms and get back to living happier lives again.

How does depression counseling work?

Depression counseling works by helping people pinpoint life problems, distorted thought patterns, and other causes of their depression, then process and work through them in order to mitigate the negative effects those factors have on their lives.

  • Consistent low mood
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Oversleeping or difficulty sleeping
  • Changes in diet (eating much more or less)

  • Loss of interest in previous hobbies or activities
  • Excessive substance use

Is depression counseling conducted in person or online?

What Are the Basic Signs of Having Depression?

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which psychiatrists and other mental health professionals use to diagnose and treat depression, lists the following symptoms of depression for MDD:

  1. Depressed mood (feelings of sadness and negativity) lasting longer than two weeks
  2. Anhedonia, which is the loss of interest or pleasure in activities a person usually enjoys
  3. Changes in appetite, sometimes leading to unintentional weight loss or gain
  4. Psychomotor retardation (slowed-down movements and thoughts)
  5. Extreme tiredness
  6. Acute feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  7. Issues with focus, attention, and/or memory
  8. Suicidality (if you’re ever considering harming yourself, call a crisis hotline immediately)

But different types of depression may have different symptoms. For example, manic depression, the mood disorder that’s also called bipolar disorder, is diagnosed by episodes of mania as well as depression. And timing of symptoms matters as well. A person with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) may only have the indications for depression at certain times of the year. And a mother who suffers from depression in the weeks after childbirth may be diagnosed with postpartum depression rather than MDD.

How Can Counseling Help Depression?

Licensed counseling, psychiatry, social work, and psychotherapy (talk therapy) at Thriveworks in Tallahassee, FL can help people with depression by first exploring the environmental, psychosocial, behavioral, genetic, and neurochemical components of a client’s mood disorder. A therapist will also want to know what the client’s therapy goals are. After this full evaluation, the therapist and the client can develop a treatment plan together with elements that best serve the client’s needs. Effective depression treatment may include any of the following evidence-based approaches:

  • Person-centered psychotherapy
  • Strength-based approaches
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy, a type of CBT
  • Supportive therapy
  • Trauma-focused therapy
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Substance abuse or addiction counseling
  • Holistic treatments
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Mindfulness
  • Coping skills training
  • Family therapy or couples therapy
  • Lifestyle modifications addressing nutrition and exercise
  • Psychosocial interventions to find community support for the depressed person
  • Behavioral activation
  • Antidepressant medications prescribed by a Thriveworks psychiatrist

Should I Seek Therapy If I’m Depressed?

If you have been experiencing depression for longer than two weeks, it might be wise to consult a qualified mental health professional at Thriveworks in Tallahassee, FL. This is because untreated depression can lead to other health problems like the following:

  • Substance abuse or addiction
  • Changes in sleep hygiene
  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Social isolation and avoidance
  • Inexplicable aches and pains
  • Concurrent anxiety and depression
  • Unemployment and financial stress
  • Conflicts in intimate relationships
  • Heart disease
  • Compromised immune system
