What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people using online therapy is to ensure that they are able to clearly hear and see me as we begin the session. I enjoy online therapy because it is convenient and comfortable for clients.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

The tools used in online therapy mirror tools that would be shared in an in-person session. Tools may include:

  • Mindfulness tools: Helping clients remain in the present moment and manage stress or anxiety.
  • Cognitive restructuring: Identifying and challenging negative thoughts and beliefs.
  • Emotional regulation tools: Techniques used to express and process unresolved emotions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they show growth in shifting negative thoughts and implementing healthy coping strategies.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by practicing the coping skills discussed, engaging in emotional expression exercises such as journaling, and practicing shifting negative thoughts or beliefs.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, find a quiet, private place where you can focus with no interruptions. It is also helpful to be prepared with the goals you would like to accomplish in therapy. The process is successful when the client and the therapist partner together to address the client's concerns.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Online Therapy vs. Traditional Therapy: What’s the Difference?

Online therapy is very similar to in-person therapy. The biggest difference is that you’ll meet with a licensed counselor or therapist remotely, whether that’s on your phone, tablet, or computer. The rest of the therapeutic process is largely the same.

As with traditional therapy, you’ll discuss your issues, symptoms, and mental health goals with your therapist or counselor during your first session. Your provider will ask questions and use your input to create an individualized treatment plan with your goals in mind. You’ll work together over the course of future sessions to tackle your mental health obstacles together.

Most types of traditional therapy services can take place remotely as well, including:

  • Depression counseling
  • Anxiety, panic disorder, and phobia therapy
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) therapy
  • Anger management
  • Substance abuse and addiction counseling
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Eating disorder counseling
  • Grief and loss counseling
  • Child and adolescent counseling

This is not a complete list but it does spotlight some of the common types of therapy that our providers offer. Reach out to Thriveworks Counseling in Sugar Land, TX to schedule an online therapy appointment today.

The Benefits of Choosing Online Therapy

Online therapy has a few major benefits. The first is convenience –– it’s much easier to schedule a session when you don’t have to worry about driving to and from an office.

Another big plus is comfort. You can choose a space that makes you comfortable, whether that’s your bedroom, living room, office, or somewhere else. Being comfortable can help you open up to your provider more easily and make more progress during each session.

There are two main types of online therapy or counseling –– therapy over the phone or through a video call. Here are some of the benefits of each:

  • Phone calls: Many of our clients love working with their provider over the phone. It’s a great option if you’re nervous about therapy or find it easier to focus on a conversation if you don’t have to worry about how you look. Therapy or counseling over the phone is very easy –– you’ll receive a phone call when your session is set to start.
  • Video sessions: Online therapy via video chat is a great option for anyone who prefers face-to-face conversations. For some, this can help make a connection with their mental health provider. Getting started with therapy via video chat is also incredibly simple –– you’ll receive a link before your meeting is scheduled to begin. Simply click the link to join the room when it’s time for your session.
