What is your go-to approach for teen counseling?

My go-to approach for helping teens in counseling is to create a safe and supportive environment where they feel understood, respected, and empowered to express themselves. I prefer this approach because adolescence can be a challenging and transformative time, marked by unique developmental tasks, identity exploration, and emotional ups and downs. By building a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust and empathy, I can effectively engage teens in the counseling process and help them navigate the complexities of adolescence.I find the best benefit in integrating a variety of therapeutic techniques and modalities tailored to each teen's individual needs and preferences. This may include elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to address specific issues such as anxiety, depression, or negative thought patterns. Additionally, incorporating expressive therapies such as art, music, or play therapy can provide teens with alternative ways to communicate and process their emotions, especially when verbal expression feels challenging.Furthermore, I often incorporate strengths-based approaches and solution-focused techniques to help teens recognize their unique strengths, resilience, and capacity for growth. By focusing on their existing strengths and resources, I can empower teens to overcome obstacles, build confidence, and create positive change in their lives. Overall, my approach to teen counseling is rooted in collaboration, flexibility, and a deep respect for each teen's autonomy and individuality.

What tools do you teach in teen counseling?

I teach:

  • Emotion regulation strategies: Adolescents learn techniques to identify and manage their emotions effectively, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, and progressive muscle relaxation.
  • Coping skills: Teens are taught practical coping strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, and other challenging emotions, including problem-solving skills, distraction techniques, and assertive communication.
  • Social skills training: Adolescents develop interpersonal skills and communication techniques to navigate peer relationships, resolve conflicts, and establish healthy boundaries.
  • Self-esteem-building activities: Teens engage in activities designed to enhance self-esteem and self-confidence, such as positive affirmations, goal setting, and self-reflection exercises.
  • Stress management techniques: Adolescents learn stress management techniques, such as time management skills, prioritization strategies, and healthy lifestyle habits, to reduce and cope with stress effectively.
  • Cognitive restructuring: Teens practice identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and cognitive distortions that contribute to emotional distress, using techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
  • Problem-solving skills: Adolescents develop problem-solving skills to address challenges and obstacles in various areas of their lives, empowering them to take proactive steps toward solutions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in teen counseling when some of these factors are observed throughout treatment:

  • Increased self-awareness: The client demonstrates a greater understanding of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, showing improved insight into their motivations, triggers, and patterns of interaction.
  • Improved coping skills: The client exhibits enhanced coping skills and resilience, demonstrating an ability to manage stress, regulate emotions, and navigate challenging situations more effectively.
  • Positive behavioral changes: There is evidence of positive behavioral changes, such as improved communication with parents or peers, increased engagement in healthy activities, or a reduction in risky behaviors.
  • Enhanced relationships: The client reports improved relationships with family members, friends, and peers, indicating healthier communication, boundaries, and connections.
  • Goal achievement: The client achieves the goals they set for counseling, whether they are related to specific symptoms, behaviors, or personal growth, indicating progress toward desired outcomes.
  • Increased confidence and self-esteem: The client demonstrates greater self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-acceptance, expressing a more positive self-image and belief in their abilities.
  • Sustained change: The client maintains progress over time, demonstrating consistency in applying therapeutic techniques and integrating new insights and skills into their daily life beyond the counseling sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement teen counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling with various activities and practices outside of sessions. Some suggestions are:

  • Journaling: Writing in a journal can help teens process their thoughts, emotions, and experiences, providing a private space for self-reflection and self-expression.
  • Relaxation techniques: Engaging in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery can promote stress reduction and emotional regulation.
  • Creative outlets: Exploring creative outlets such as art, music, or writing can provide teens with alternative ways to express themselves and cope with difficult emotions.
  • Mindfulness practices: Practicing mindfulness exercises, such as mindful breathing or body scans, can help teens cultivate present-moment awareness and enhance their ability to manage stress and anxiety.
  • Self-care activities: Engaging in self-care activities such as exercise, spending time outdoors, getting adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy diet can support overall well-being and complement the therapeutic process.
  • Seeking social support: Connecting with supportive friends, family members, or support groups can offer encouragement, validation, and perspective, helping teens feel less isolated and more understood.
  • Homework assignments: Completing homework assignments or practicing skills learned in counseling sessions can reinforce learning and facilitate progress outside of therapy.

What should someone do to prepare for starting teen counseling?

To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can take the following steps:

  • Reflect on feelings and goals: Spend some time reflecting on your feelings, concerns, and goals for counseling. Think about what you hope to achieve and what specific issues or challenges you want to address in therapy.
  • Write down questions: Consider writing down any questions or concerns you have about the counseling process, what to expect during sessions, or the therapist's approach. Bringing these questions with you can help ensure that you address all of your concerns and feel more prepared.
  • Gather relevant information: If you have any relevant information or documents related to your mental health history, previous therapy experiences, or medications, consider bringing them with you to your first session. This information can provide valuable context for your therapist and help them better understand your needs.
  • Keep an open mind: Approach counseling with an open mind and a willingness to engage in the therapeutic process. Be open to exploring new perspectives, trying out new techniques, and discussing topics that may feel challenging or uncomfortable.
  • Be honest and authentic: Be honest and authentic in your interactions with your therapist. Share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences openly, even if they are difficult to talk about. Remember that therapy is a safe and confidential space where you can be yourself without judgment.
  • Set realistic expectations: Recognize that counseling is a collaborative process that takes time and effort. While therapy can be highly beneficial, it is not a quick fix, and meaningful change often requires patience, persistence, and commitment to the process.

Starting Teen counseling

What is teen counseling?

Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.

How does teen counseling work?

Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Sterling Heights have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.

Does my teen need therapy?

Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.

Is teen counseling conducted in person or online?

Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Sterling Heights, MI offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does teen counseling last?

The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.

My overall experience has been as expected when dealing with behavior healthcare. There is no real care for the patient and their needs. I spent an hour on the phone with a call center rep from the billing department who said I had no insurance on file, then proceeded to transfer me to the correct department who said I did. I have been without medication that was prescribed on Monday. When I received a call back from the psychiatrist, it seemed that your company forgot to send it over. That is unacceptable behavior when it comes to dealing with any customer.

It's a wonderful experience working with Cornelia Golden. She presents a healthy balance of comfortability and professionalism. She listens with the intent to hear what is being said and yet hear what's not being said. Cornelia has a very calming presence and I feel both confident in her counseling skills and that my concerns are professionally cared for. She is a very capable counselor. Clients will greatly benefit from working with her. I am happy to write this review for Ms. Cornelis Golden.
