What is your go-to approach for grief & loss counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is to use CBT and person-centered approaches to sessions. I find these methods to be effective in supporting a person through their grief and helping teach skills that are functional and effective.

What tools do you teach in grief & loss counseling?

I provide grief and loss clients emotional support, psychoeducation about grief, tools for managing anxiety and low mood that might arise from the grief, and education about maintaining healthy boundaries and consistency in life after the loss.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief and loss counseling when they report improvement in symptoms.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement grief & loss counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in grief and loss counseling by attending support groups for persons experiencing a loss.

What should someone do to prepare for starting grief & loss counseling?

To prepare for their first grief and loss counseling session, an individual can prepare a quiet safe space so that they can talk openly without interruption.

Starting Grief & loss counseling

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Sterling Heights, MI have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Sterling Heights, MI will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

What Are the Symptoms and Effects of Grief?

Anyone who has lost a loved one at any point in their life knows just how painful it can be. That said, they might not know all of the symptoms and effects that can accompany grief, as each experience is unique. Negative effects of grief and loss include:

  • Difficulty staying or falling asleep
  • Irrational thoughts or behaviors
  • Sudden changes in appetite or weight
  • Fear or confusion
  • Panic attacks
  • Depression or anxiety

The grief counselors at Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb County can help you to work through these difficult feelings and physical effects of grief and loss. They will get to know you, the nature of your loss, as well as your needs in counseling. Then, they will build a plan for your recovering from the loss and going on to live a happy, fulfilled life.

What Is the Grief Process?

The grieving process is largely personal and individualized. In other words, no two experiences are the same. That being said, experts have named several stages that you may enter at any point in your grief process, which include:

  1. Denial and Isolation: In this stage, the individual denies the loss. This is a normal response to overwhelming emotions that accompany the loss of a loved one. Typically, the individual enters this stage first.
  2. Anger: The “anger” stage is self-explanatory. It is marked with anger and typically follows the denial stage.
  3. Bargaining: This stage is characterized by helplessness. The individual engages in “if only” statements like, “If only I had been a little nicer,” or, “If only I’d taken them to see a doctor sooner.”
  4. Depression: Grieving can bring on feelings or symptoms of depression, too. This stage is characterized by intense sadness and regret.
  5. Acceptance: And finally, at some point, the individual may accept the loss. It can be viewed as the calm after the storm.

You may relate to any or all of these stages of grief. Or, you might experience a different grief process all together. Either way, a grief counselor at Thriveworks Sterling Heights in Macomb, MI can help you through it. Call us today to book an appointment.

My overall experience has been as expected when dealing with behavior healthcare. There is no real care for the patient and their needs. I spent an hour on the phone with a call center rep from the billing department who said I had no insurance on file, then proceeded to transfer me to the correct department who said I did. I have been without medication that was prescribed on Monday. When I received a call back from the psychiatrist, it seemed that your company forgot to send it over. That is unacceptable behavior when it comes to dealing with any customer.

It's a wonderful experience working with Cornelia Golden. She presents a healthy balance of comfortability and professionalism. She listens with the intent to hear what is being said and yet hear what's not being said. Cornelia has a very calming presence and I feel both confident in her counseling skills and that my concerns are professionally cared for. She is a very capable counselor. Clients will greatly benefit from working with her. I am happy to write this review for Ms. Cornelis Golden.
