What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

A go-to approach for helping kids in child therapy is a check-in routine. You can usually ask about the rose, bud, and thorn concept where you discuss the best part of the week, something you are looking forward to, and the most challenging part of the week. Through check-in, it would make sense to get some input from a guardian as well to see what they are also seeing in between sessions. You can keep a routine so the child knows what to expect for ongoing appointments and usually will have some play therapy activity toward the end of the session.

What tools do you teach in child therapy?

The following tools can be helpful in child therapy:

  • Check in: Rose, bud, and thorn ( I will explain in sessions!)
  • Play therapy: This assists with building communication and rapport building
  • Impulse control: An activity/frustration tolerance activity (I.E. Jenga)

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress in therapy when the child and/or guardian report they are able to utilize the tools and strategies discussed in sessions but they can apply it outside of sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement child therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in child therapy with creating routines to assist with consistency and getting their child involved with additional resources including groups and other supports to assist with social skills building and strengths/interesting identification and building

What should someone do to prepare for starting child therapy?

To prepare for their first child therapy session a family can have their first appointment together for the intake. Additionally giving the child some control of the session to provide a safe space for them for on-going appointments.

Is My Child Stressed Out? Signs of Stress in Children

Because every child reacts differently to stress, it is sometimes difficult to tell how well your child is coping. Here are a few signs to watch for:

  • Frequent stomachaches or headaches
  • Mood swings or overreacting to small problems
  • Changes to sleep patterns, such as trouble falling asleep or nightmares
  • Acting out, either with aggression, defying authority or lying
  • Trouble concentrating on schoolwork or a drop in academic performance
  • Regression activities, such as bedwetting or thumb sucking

If you feel as though your child is exhibiting one or more of these signs then he or she may be having a difficult time processing the stressors in their life. Talking to one of our qualified child therapists at Thriveworks Salem Counseling who are skilled in assessing and evaluating childhood behaviors will help give you peace of mind and get your child the help they need.
