What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is to develop a comprehensive set of skills that address a variety of symptoms. Clients will learn and utilize DBT emotional regulation skills, self-soothing, grounding, mindfulness, and deep breathing in order to reduce emotional and physiological stress, thought replacement for intrusive thoughts, and narrative therapy tools like trauma narrative and recovery narrative to address the trauma story. I also provide a safe space for individuals to express traumatic grief and process their thoughts and feelings when they are ready.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach a method of deep breathing called 4 square breathing, impart mindfulness skills, encourage the use of 12-minute meditations and other examples of meditations that address stress and relaxation, and encourage exercise and yoga outside of therapy sessions. I teach DBT emotional regulation and self-soothing skills from a book PDF that I provide clients—skills utilizing the five senses for grounding oneself in the present moment. I also work with clients to learn and understand how to use thought replacement, reframing, and narrative techniques.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when they have communicated developing a practice that reduces symptoms. When clients are able to commit to not just therapy but using practices outside of therapy, their symptoms will improve.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy with exercise, yoga, meditation, deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, and contemplative practices like walking, swimming, golf, or artwork.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can develop a list of examples of situations where their symptoms are increased.
