What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is to help the client find movements and strategies that will decrease the frequency and intensity of depression. I assist the client in developing healthy cognitive patterns and beliefs about themself and the world that lead to alleviation and help prevent increased depression

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling: assigning the client to keep a daily journal of automatic thoughts associated with depressed feelings, and assisting the client in discovering and implementing strategies that reduce depressive symptoms (including but not limited to more physical movement, less internal focus, and increased social involvement).

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

The client will demonstrate the ability to identify, manage, and communicate the intensity of experienced depression using a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most severe level of depression experienced and 1 being the lowest level of depression experienced. Progress will be made when overall depression is reduced and daily functioning is improved.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by completing homework and journal assignments, and by scheduling activities that have a high likelihood of pleasure.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can: be prepared to describe current and past experiences with depression, complete with its impact on daily life and attempts to resolve it.

The Physiological and Physical Factors of Depression

Symptoms can change from one person to the next, but here is a list of common depression symptoms:

  • Feeling worthless and/or hopeless
  • General discontent or unhappiness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Anger and irritability
  • Fluctuations in weight and appetite
  • Loss of interest in once loved activities
  • Withdrawal from loved ones
  • Loneliness; social isolation
  • Anxiety

Again, the symptoms of depression can vary widely. However, depression is characterized by the two big symptoms of despair and a loss of general interest in life or day to day activities. So, if you relate to the aforementioned symptoms, please consider reaching out to a professional.

Causes of Depression: Why Am I Depressed?

Unfortunately, there isn’t one easily identified cause of depression. Instead, there are many different factors that can contribute to the development and/or exacerbation of depression. For example, certain life experiences might trigger a bout of depression. Consider: a breakup, the loss of a loved one, or another particularly painful event. These can all contribute to depression. The good news is that when there is a recognizable cause or contributing factor, your therapist can use this information to inform your treatment plan and help you confront the cause.

Now, in instances in which the cause of your depression is not distinguishable, don’t worry. Depression therapy still proves effective in helping people manage their symptoms and get back to a happier, healthier place again. Additionally, medication for depression—like antidepressants—might also help.
