What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

When working with individuals who are seeking counseling for depression, I help them to feel empowered and to recognize that depression is both a physical and mental health condition. Being able to help them break any negative thoughts about themselves, self-blaming, and other negative coping mechanisms is often helpful—depression is not a personal flaw. My focus is to help them feel in control, while also giving them strategies to improve, both emotionally and physically.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

The tools that I typically utilize in counseling with individuals who are seeking treatment for depression are:Cognitive behavioral (CBT) strategies, Cognitive reframing, Mindfulness, as well as client-centered approaches. My focus for individuals dealing with depression is to help them understand that they can play a significant role in helping to relieve symptoms, by using their new tools to help feel empowered.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

When a client is in counseling to address depression, meaningful progress is often observed by their reports of a reduction in the intensity and frequency of depressing thoughts. For many clients, this is most obvious when they begin reintroducing activities they previously enjoyed into their lives.Other positive signs of progress include a client seeking a stronger connection with others or places that had previously brought them happiness. They may also note an increase in energy and motivation in their daily lives, as well.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients who are in therapy to address depression can supplement their time in counseling by:

  • Engaging in activities they enjoy.
  • Journaling if needed.
  • Seeking intentional activities that provide a positive outlet for their emotions.
  • Finding ways of feeling connected to others.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

When someone is starting therapy to address depression, I suggest they identify how depression is playing a role in their lives, and what they would hope to achieve out of therapy.

Diagnosing Anxiety and Depression: How Can You Tell the Difference?

Like described earlier, anxiety and depression are often unfortunate friends. You may have anxiety after a traumatic experience and later develop depression because of it. Or, you could be battling depression and develop anxiety when other areas of your life start falling behind. Regardless, it’s important to understand the difference between the two so you can recognize the feelings you have.

Depression can cause feelings of despair, emptiness, hopelessness, insomnia/hypersomnia, and lack of interest in activities and relationships that once brought you joy.

Anxiety can cause you to feel excessive worry, restlessness, shortness of breath, changes in sleeping patterns, and changes in appetite.

While those aren’t all of the symptoms, they are common. There are also different types of anxiety and depression, and your Thriveworks counselor in White Marsh can help you figure out what you may be specifically battling. Identifying this ensures the correct plan of treatment is taken.

I tried to call billing; I missed an evening telehealth appointment because of a widespread power outage from the massive storms of 1/9/2024. Offshore personnel had no idea what I was talking about; they said they were in the Phillippines, and in addition the language barrier was quite severe. Health professionals here are wonderful to work with; however, technical or financial issues are difficult to straighten out. I gave up and will just deal with the treating persons here.
