What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is a blend of Gottman-method couples therapy and solution-focused brief therapy. I find the best benefit in these approaches because Gottman-method couples therapy includes a thorough assessment of the couple’s relationship and integrates research-based interventions, while SFBT focuses on the couple's strengths and resilience. I have seen the effectiveness of a positive approach.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: disarming conflicting verbal communication; increasing intimacy, respect, and affection; removing barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy; and creating a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a couple is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when there is improvement in the couple's relationship, compatibility, and intimacy, and more generally when the couple rates themselves as closer to their goals. These changes can often be seen directly during therapy sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by keeping an eye out for when their problems are less present or gone altogether. The couple can then identify what is different about these times, and do more of what is already working. Each client can “catch your partner doing something right” and thank them.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can think about what is bringing you to therapy. Why now? If you have done therapy before, what was most effective for you? What are your hopes and fears about therapy? You can also think about your goals for therapy. What would you like to be different in your life as a result of the therapy? Don't forget to bring a list of your current medications.

What Is Couples Therapy and How Does It Work?

Couples therapy is likely exactly as you imagine it to be. It’s a type of therapy that focuses on helping couples work through any conflicts and improve the state of their relationship. That said, couples therapy can look different from one couple to the next. Why? Because these therapists design treatment with their specific clients in mind. Here are two key factors that go into planning therapy for couples:

  1. Unique challenges: Couples therapists work to understand what the couple is struggling with and what obstacles are present in their relationship.
  2. Specific goals: Couples therapists also work to understand what the couple’s specific goals are for therapy. These goals might center around working through their conflicts or disagreements, or they might center around building the overall strength of the relationship.

Couples therapy or marriage counseling can help you and your partner work through your unique challenges and achieve your specific goals. And the therapists at Thriveworks Counseling would love nothing more than to be the professionals that guide you on this journey.

Common Relationship Issues

We’re all human. In a nutshell, when it comes to relationships, this means that we will run into conflict. It’s important to remember that fighting with our partners or spouses is completely normal. However, it’s also important that we know how to approach these conflicts and other challenges in our relationship. Here are some common relationship issues that could negatively affect your relationship, especially if you don’t address them properly:

  • Infidelity
  • Breach of trust
  • Parental disagreements
  • Behavior problems in kids
  • Financial trouble
  • Opposing values or beliefs
  • Poor communication or lack thereof

These challenges are difficult to talk about and work through. Fortunately, though, couples therapists and marriage counselors are trained to help couples do just that. As we outlined earlier, one of the main goals of couples therapy and marriage counseling is to help people work through the problems that are present in their relationship.

The Benefit of a Third Party

Some people ask and wonder how someone who is outside of the relationship could make a difference. When it comes to therapy, sometimes this is exactly what we need: an unbiased third party who can offer a perspective that we don’t get otherwise. In couples therapy, this third party can also serve as a mediator and support system during tough conversations.

My online therapy is with my therapy provider Gabriel Oliver. Gabriel is a total gentlemen who allows me to feel comfortable to open up and express my issues freely. He is an excellent listener who pays close attention to the details I express. Not only is he empathetic and attentive to my feelings but he helps me feel like I am in a judgement free zone. Since he is such a kind and compassionate professional he has empowered me with much more strength to begin to make progress in my journey to heal from the stresses that have overwhelmed me. He asks really thought provoking questions & I was recently encouraged to do some soul searching which has enabled me to decide to make some positive changes in my situation after facing the realization that with his expertise he will assist me to move forward from a difficult time in my life in a profound way! I feel like i will finally have a chance to focus on making a brighter future and grow from the challenges I am still currently facing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
