What is your go-to approach for depression counseling?

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy. I find the best benefit in CBT because it helps clients correct the behaviors that keep the client depressed.

What tools do you teach in depression counseling?

I teach the following tools in depression counseling:

  • Cognitive distortions: Figuring out the cognitive distortions the client is having will help them change those cognitions.
  • Coping skills for depression: This helps clients have coping skills to deal with symptoms of depression.
  • Psychoeducation: Helps all clients understand not just depression but other diagnoses they may receive, thereby empowering them.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when the client reports getting out the bed and getting active. It's wonderful seeing their perspective transform.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement depression counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by with connecting other people in the support network. It's also helpful to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and exercise. You'd be surprised at how this makes a difference in your life.

What should someone do to prepare for starting depression counseling?

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can note the symptoms you are experiencing, share what you have felt comfort in during this time, and relax before the session.

Dr. Tressa Stiles is an amazing therapist who immediately put me at ease with the way she was able to hear what I was saying. I felt understood and that there was no judgement. While she took time to hear me, she also offered a few suggestions to try out and that I found helpful. The most important thing to me is knowing I have a safe space where I can share what’s troubling me.
