Starting Treatment With a Psychologist

What are psychologists?

Psychologists are mental health professionals that provide psychotherapy services and diagnoses for their clients. They have more research-focused training than most therapists, as they are more medically educated and receive a more general education about therapeutic approaches and theory.

How do psychologists work?

Thriveworks psychologists in Lafayette, LA provide standard psychotherapy services, tailoring treatment to each client and their unique concerns. However, they can also provide diagnoses to clients when appropriate, something that therapists and counselors cannot do. Finally, in some states in the U.S., they are allowed to prescribe medication.

How long would I see a psychologist?

Psychological treatment at Thriveworks Lafayette is very individualized and specific to each client, which means that the duration of treatment is often varied depending on a client’s condition or disorder, the state of their symptoms, and their specific goals.

Need more help deciding?

Lately, it feels like stress at work is starting to creep into other parts of your life. You’re irritable and short-tempered at home, causing tension in your relationships. You can’t sleep at night and it feels impossible to concentrate on important tasks and projects. You’re just not feeling yourself and it’s all becoming a little overwhelming.

Stress, anxiety, and emotional changes are normal parts of life. But when these feelings begin to interfere with normal activities, it may be time to seek help from a counseling psychologist. Major changes in your life, the death of a loved one, or a mental illness can take you on an emotional rollercoaster but a psychologist can help you work through it.

Our licensed mental health professionals can help you understand emotional changes or mental health challenges and give you the tools you need to work through them. Contact Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA today to connect with a psychologist and begin regaining control of your life.

When Should I Consider Seeing a Psychologist?

There are many ways psychologists help people improve their mental health. While psychologists do treat severe mental health issues, they also help people cope with everyday stressors and uncomfortable emotions. You don’t have to be facing life-threatening problems to benefit from working with a licensed psychologist.

Life can throw curveballs your way when you least expect it. New problems may appear or chronic mental health issues may return suddenly. Managing intense feelings on your own can feel impossible, or maybe you don’t know where to start. A psychologist can guide you through tough seasons of life and give you the skills to build a better future.

Common reasons people decide to pursue counseling with a psychologist include:

  • Relationship problems
  • Major life changes
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Trouble dealing with grief or mourning
  • Anger and stress management
  • Depression disorders
  • Panic disorder or other anxiety disorders
  • Insomnia or other sleep issues
  • Substance abuse or addiction

What Does Psychological Treatment Involve?

A psychologist is highly trained to diagnose and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral health issues and illnesses. Your past experiences, personality, and biology will all be taken into account during psychological evaluation. Your psychologist will take time to get to know what makes you tick and how that relates to your current experiences and emotions.

After your psychologist has a better understanding of your concerns, symptoms, and goals, they can develop a treatment plan specifically tailored to you. Your plan may involve one or many types of therapy, prescription medications, or a combination of different treatment modalities. You may also learn coping mechanisms and other techniques to more effectively deal with difficult feelings and manage them in the future.

Possible forms of talk therapy your psychologist may recommend and utilize include:

  • Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT)
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Exposure therapy
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
