What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy is to help clients identify negative thinking, helping clients become aware of their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. I find the best benefit of using cognitive behavioral therapy is helping individuals become aware of their negative thinking patterns and replace them with more positive and realistic ones.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy:

  • Role-play: Role-play is a technique where people act out a scenario or take on a role to understand a situation from a different perspective. It can be used to prepare for difficult situations, improve communication, and spark brainstorming.
  • Journaling: This technique involves writing down one’s thoughts, feelings, and insights. It can help clients observe their daily thought patterns and release their emotions.
  • Relaxation techniques: These techniques can help individuals manage stress and anxiety, and include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery.
  • Cognitive restructuring: This technique involves examining negative thought patterns, such as over-generalizing or assuming the worst will happen.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know my client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when they are applying learned coping skills consistently and practicing accountability and self-awareness of negative thought patterns and responses.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy through homework assignments given to them in therapy and practicing their coping skills, such as relaxation techniques, journaling, exercising, maintaining a healthy diet, and good sleep hygiene.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy session, an individual can identify what goals they would like to work towards achieving that would best address the issue they are presenting with.

Starting Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

What is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)?

At Thriveworks, Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recognized and evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors that can contribute to various mental health issues or challenges that people are struggling with.

What does a cognitive behavioral therapist do?

Cognitive behavioral therapists specialize in Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help you to identify and comprehend your thought patterns, which often encompass automatic negative thoughts, cognitive distortions, and self-defeating beliefs. Once these negative thought patterns are pinpointed, cognitive behavioral therapists aim to challenge and replace them with the objective of fostering more constructive and logical thinking. In addition, these therapists place significant emphasis on implementing positive behavioral changes based on the newly established, healthier thought patterns.

What is CBT best for?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is particularly effective for addressing conditions like anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. It focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviors, making it well-suited for issues related to distorted thinking and emotional regulation.

How much does a CBT session cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

What is the success rate of CBT?

The success rate of CBT varies depending on the intentions of the client and their condition(s).

What is better: CBT or DBT?

The selection between cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on an individual’s unique needs and challenges. CBT is commonly chosen for addressing conditions such as anxiety and depression, whereas DBT is especially beneficial for individuals dealing with borderline personality disorder, emotional regulation issues, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.

Is CBT conducted in person or online?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with our Thriveworks therapists in Kennesaw, GA is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many sessions is CBT?

Generally, CBT is considered a short-term therapy, typically lasting for about 12 to 20 weekly sessions. In some cases, it might extend to around 16 to 20 sessions for more complex issues.

Let's talk about Kelli Beechler for a second! This woman is an absolute God send to me! If you don’t believe in God, well then let's just say the universe or regardless of whatever it is you actually believe in, she has been an absolute gift in my life! This is a woman who NEVER makes you feel like you are just a number or a paycheck to her! I feel so thankful to know her! I can't fully express in words, how blessed I feel to have her in my life but I'm going to try just for the sake of someone else who might need to know her could be reading this. She is someone who’s beyond kind and compassionate and caring! She always meets me exactly where I am, and there has never been a single time that I don’t feel better after a session with her. My sessions change my week, my life, and also keep me sane when things go crazy! It brings me comfort in remembering no matter how hard things feel I get to see her and she will do whatever is in her power to help me help myself! She never fails to remind me who I am in my core, or what I’m trying to accomplish, or how to lead with a level head and not my emotions based on what I’ve told her I'm trying to accomplish. She helps me stay focused, determined, and accountable. Her soul is one of the best I’ve ever seen! I have been in and out of therapy the better half of my life and I'm about to be 28. I have had all kinds of people and teachings and nothing compares to the relationship I’ve developed with this woman in just a few short months. I don’t feel like she’s just a counselor, I feel like she’s my friend! Kelli shows up for me in a way no one else in my life does! I feel like I can tell her anything without fear. It's always a judgement free zone! I feel like she always comes from a place of love and of service in her heart! She’s always teaching me new ways and tricks and tips that help me. I am going through a great deal of things in my life right now and I’ve got to say I don’t really know what I would do without this woman and her support! The role she plays in my life is so significant. There is something so special about knowing you can count on someone, and not just count on someone but have great advice. There is something huge to say when a person is choosing to show up for you when you need them most, and I just want to express that I have literally never ever felt like I was just a way for her to make money. When I think about Kelli I can't help but want to express how beautiful her soul is. She is such a special person and anyone who knows her knows she’s a gift; the kind of pure magic! Don’t believe me? Set up a session with her and find out for yourself!
