What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is to help couples overcome the effects of alcohol use, substance use, misuse of prescription medications, or other addictive behaviors such as gambling, etc. I find the best benefits in using cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing strategies, solution-focused therapy, and existential therapy because these approaches help people: (1) control their emotions through what they think; (2) uncover the cost and benefits of using; (3) help people understand their own straights; and (4) separate the person from the problem.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couple/marriage counseling:

  • Relapse prevention
  • Reduce negative thoughts
  • Coping skills for anxiety and depression symptoms
  • Social skills training
  • Communication/assertive training
  • Coping skills for craving and urges to use
  • Behavior rehearsal: practice new thoughts before actual situations
  • Activity scheduling
  • Thought-stopping behaviors
  • Providing education about thinking errors regarding substance use
  • Understanding one’s own strengths
  • Exploring universal questions of mortality, the meaning of life, freedom, responsibility, anxiety, and loneliness.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when the client has reduced the use of addictive substances or reduced the time spent on an addictive behavior.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling by attending AA, NA, or Al-Anon meetings. Another way to supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling is to commit to doing their therapy homework. Homework is a collaborative effort between the couple and the therapist.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can make a list of the problems you are facing in your relationship regarding past, present, or current substance use or addictive behaviors.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

How Can Couples Counseling Help My Relationship?

In addition to providing you with specific tools and guidance related to your present issues, the couples therapists at Thriveworks Jacksonville, FL will offer important tools for maintaining a happy, healthy relationship moving forward.

You will likely discuss:

  1. How to communicate effectively: Oftentimes, our relationship issues stem from poor communication or a lack thereof! We’re confronted with unpleasant emotions and take them out on our loved ones before having a productive conversation about the problem at hand. We can all benefit from taking a few minutes to step back and evaluate the situation. And then approach a conversation with our significant other with patience and openness.
  2. The importance of maintaining relationship expectations: It’s also likely that your couples therapist will spearhead a conversation about relationship expectations. Many of us adapt unrealistic expectations from TV shows and movies about what a relationship should look like. In reality, relationships aren’t pretty or perfect 24/7. And it’s important to remember this. A couples therapist at Thriveworks Fort Lauderdale can help you manage these expectations.
  3. Good relationship habits to develop and stick to: In many areas of our life, we develop good habits and then fail to stick to them. We forget about them or put them on the backburner. Your relationship therapist will remind you of the good habits you should implement and stick to in your relationship.

Thriveworks Jacksonville, FL couples therapists and counselors help their clients to resolve present issues, communication more effectively, maintain relationship expectations, stick to good relationship habits, and more.

Jessica Gort is by far the best therapist I’ve ever had. She’s not only met my needs and expectations, she goes above and beyond that. When I first met with Jessica i was newly sober and recently lost my father, I was struggling and had just ended a professional relationship with a prior therapist that couldn’t help me with what I needed at that time. I felt lost and was losing hope until I met her. I expressed my concerns with Jessica and she did everything she could to help me in the ways that I needed, to keep my sobriety and mental health intact during my grieving process. If I could rate her 10 stars I would. She’s amazing. Highly recommend.
