What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. I am going to help you process how you are feeling, behaving, and what you are thinking and how these things correlate, but I am also going to be gentle with you and always make sure you are safe and aware of your safety within our sessions.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach people mindfulness to better understand the ways they are feeling and why they are feeling like this. I also teach forgiveness of oneself—it is not that you did anything wrong; you were just there, and it's important to forgive yourself for this.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in trauma therapy when they are able to open up more about their traumas and find more comfort in discussing them.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy is a delicate process, and you do have to be careful about opening yourself to the process so as to not further trigger yourself, but that being said, building a strong network of family and friends who are able to support you outside of therapy is important.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

Mainly, you can prepare for it to be uncomfortable. As much as I will try to create the safest, most comfortable place I can for you, the things you discuss will be hard. Know that I will be here to help you as you navigate your way through it.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
