What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in online therapy is the exact same as in person. Online therapy can seem daunting or different at first, but I find if you treat it the same as in-person therapy, then it can help increase your comfort levels. It also allows you the benefit of less stress, with no need to “get somewhere on time” — your time and work are still worth it, and you can still have a positive therapy experience in online therapy.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Once again, the tools I teach within online therapy are the same as those that I teach in person; there are few things that I provide in my in-person therapy sessions that aren't beneficial in my online therapy sessions. Sometimes, it can be easier to quickly pull up some information to better support or inform something being said or taught within an online session.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I think a client's continued engagement is a sign of their progress, maybe more so in online therapy than in-person therapy. Sometimes, it can feel harder to disengage in person than when there is a screen between us, so when a client continues to positively engage, it shows they are giving therapy the thought and effort it deserves.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

A client can supplement their time in online therapy by doing the “homework” given within the session. There is also a wealth of knowledge out there that a client can view on their own, but they are always encouraged to discuss it with the therapist, especially if they have questions about something.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, just try to treat it no differently than if you were in the room with your therapist. If you can blur that line, then you will have no problem being just as effective with online therapy as you would with in-person therapy.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Have you ever attended a telehealth appointment? Doctor’s appointments are now offered online and allow patients to talk to their doctor without having to travel to the office. Many people find these telehealth options to be helpful, as they can’t or don’t always want to leave their house (especially if they aren’t feeling well).

In much the same way, counseling appointments are now offered online and allow clients to talk to their provider without having to travel to the office! Many people find these online options to be helpful, effective, and beneficial. Again, they can’t or don’t always want to leave the house (especially if they’re feeling down). Additionally, some find that opening up to their provider is much easier to do in an online environment.

Being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure. –Bob Marley

Opening up to a counselor can supplement growth and healing. It can help you work through personal challenges and find greater happiness. It can help you improve your personal and professional progress. It can help you live better. If you’d like to experience all that counseling can do for you, consider trying online counseling. As we described above, online counseling allows you to attend counseling sessions right from home (or anywhere else you please). The counselors at Thriveworks Counseling in Frederick, MD would be happy to talk to you over the phone or in video sessions. The choice is yours. Contact us when you’re ready to schedule.

Why Choose Online Counseling? How Does It Work?

Online counseling is easy. You don’t have to be well-versed with technology, you simply need access to a phone, computer, or another device that allows you to attend your sessions online, and then cell service or internet connection! If you can check those two boxes, you’re all set.

Here at Thriveworks Counseling in Frederick, MD, we have two online counseling options for our clients to pick from:

  1. Telephone counseling: First, we have telephone counseling. It’s exactly as you’d imagine: you simply answer your counselor’s call at the time of your session and have your session then.
  2. Video counseling: Then, we have video counseling. This is probably just as you’d imagine it, too: you enter a video chat room at the time of your session and talk to your counselor then. They’ll send you your video link shortly after you schedule your session so that you’re ready to go!

In our eyes, you can’t go wrong with either of these online counseling options. Now, some people find that they prefer one over the other. Feel free to try both to figure out which online counseling option you like best.

How Can Counseling Online Help Me?

Counseling can help one improve their life in more ways than one. The benefits that you find will depend on what you’re looking to get out of counseling and what areas of your life could use some tidying up. For example, online counseling can help people…

  • Learn how to better manage their stress levels
  • Better understand and work through their emotions
  • Have tough, yet essential conversations with their loved ones
  • Work through conflicts and improve their relationships
  • Gain closure and move forward after the loss of a loved one
  • Understand what they really want and need out of life
  • Heal from a traumatic experience

As you can see from the example above, online counseling can help people accomplish important goals and get to an overall happier, healthier place. If you’re looking to work through a specific challenge or you’d like a professional to help you evaluate your current life situation, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Counseling in Frederick, MD. We’d be happy to help.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
