What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My go-to approach for treating anxiety is cognitive behavioral therapy. I find the best benefit in cognitive behavioral therapy because anxiety is caused for a number of reasons, but usually leads to a place of overthinking and worrying, which leads to negative behaviors or feelings. Cognitive behavioral therapy is about how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all interact, so it can be vital in breaking down where the anxiety comes from and how to best deal with it.

My go-to approach for treating depression is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I prefer to utilize cognitive behavioral therapy as it is so important to figure out what thoughts are causing the feelings and behaviors that the client is having. Once we know the thoughts that put you in a negative place we can better plan on how to improve those thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

The main tools I teach in anxiety therapy are:

  • Breathing exercises: Taking slow, calm breathes gives you a literal pause and starts to give your body physiological reactions to help calm you down.
  • Mindfulness exercises: Sometimes breathing exercises alone are not enough, and in those times you need to think about something to re-center yourself and shut out the negative stimulus.

Tools I teach in depression counseling are:

  • Thought distraction: When something is making you sad, giving yourself a reprieve from it by just distracting yourself can be helpful.
  • Identifying and challenging cognitive distortions: Many times we can tell ourselves things that simply aren't true. Gaining control of that negative self-talk and coming back to a place of fact can be helpful in improving your thoughts which can then improve your feelings or your mood.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when their anxiety symptoms begin to decrease and they find themselves being more prone to do the things that they could not bring themselves to do before.

I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they begin having a more positive world view and finding joy in things again.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

It is very important for a client to supplement their time in anxiety therapy by utilizing and practicing the anxiety-reducing tools and coping skills outside of sessions. The more you use them, the easier they are to use, especially in a difficult situation.

Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by practicing the things discussed in therapy and working on building their support network to have people to talk to about the things upsetting them.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, just try to relax — I will provide you with the most calming atmosphere I can, and if you come into the session not ready to discuss something, that is ok, we will change topics until you are ready. I may push you at times, but only when I think you are ready to handle it.

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can try to prepare yourself to discuss the tough topics that may be brought up. There is a reason you feel the way you do and these are the things that you will need to process in therapy, open up with your therapist and you can begin the healing process.

Did you know that depression and anxiety are the two most common mental health disorders in the world? A lot of the signs and symptoms of these two mental health disorders end up overlapping so it’s not always easy to distinguish one over the other. However, what is important is that you understand and recognize when you might be battling with one, or both, of these conditions. Getting help as soon as you can, can greatly improve how quickly you overcome them and start living a happier, healthier life.

The reasons why people develop anxiety and depression are complex. If you are struggling with one or both of these conditions, consider working with an anxiety or depression therapist at Thriveworks Counseling in Frederick, MD. Choosing to seek help isn’t always an easy decision. Depression vs. Anxiety: How Can I Tell the Difference?

Anxiety and depression, as we briefly mentioned, have a lot of similar signs and symptoms. This can make it difficult to distinguish the two. In some cases, you may develop anxiety because of your depression and vice versa. Here are symptoms of each:

  • Anxiety: lack of sleep, restlessness, constant worry, mood swings, irritability, heart palpitations, excessive sweating
  • Depression: intense emotions, unusually persistent emotions, lethargy, fatigue, mood swings, worry, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, and lack of interest in activities that once brought you joy

The ways in which you experience anxiety and/or depression go beyond the lists above. You may have noticed that some of the symptoms overlap. Battling these emotions can be extremely difficult to handle alone. Luckily, with the help of a therapist at Thriveworks in Frederick, MD, you can tackle these issues safely and effectively.
