What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is the Gottman method. I find this approach supports healthy communication and connection with common sense and tools that guide you through the process of learning new approaches to problem-solving and boundaries.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: how to be a great listener, how to make repairs after a fight, how to avoid pitfalls of relationships (criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling), and short daily exercises to cultivate communication and connection, to name a few.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they report that things are better, they are able to share successes, and also recognize when things don't go as well. They also report that emotional outbursts have decreased and communication is increasing. Each couple is unique and what feels like success is also unique, so I rely a lot on the reports of those I am working with as well as observations during sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Nowadays, clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with podcasts and videos that support what we are working on. I like to recommend reading material, videos, and/or small activities I provide for them as well. I encourage each couple to find ways that work within their lifestyle to intentionally connect and communicate through hobbies, activities, or just being at home around the house. Whatever they choose to supplement counseling with needs to fit into real life in a way that makes it practical and meaningful.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, couples should think about what they really are hoping to accomplish, both together and individually. It is important to take some time to self-reflect as well as consider things they may be doing that are not working. Understand that you didn't get to this place overnight and it takes time to do the repair work. Bringing patience and an open mind is a great place to start. It also helps to give yourself and your partner a little grace as you begin the process.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

It’s highly possible that you and your partner are also experiencing relationship or marriage difficulties that are harming your connection, and driving distance between both of you. At Thriveworks in Cypress, TX we’d like to offer you hope through couples therapy or marriage counseling. Should We Talk with a Couples Therapist?

It’s up to both parties in the relationship to decide if they need to seek professional assistance. But if you decide that you’d like to work with a therapist or counselor, you’ll be making a choice that prioritizes your relationship and offers you the support and guidance of a provider who cares. Though each relationship is different, there are common signs of unhealthy dynamics that may be able to be improved via therapy or counseling, including:

  • Avoiding physical touch or sex
  • Lying and other forms of emotional manipulation
  • Arguments that last for hours or days
  • Passive-aggressive or abusive behavior
  • Inability to respect each other’s boundaries
  • Cheating

These are just a few of the many different ways that negative emotions and behaviors can harm your relationship. If your relationship with your partner has been compromised by other actions or behaviors, you can still talk with one of our mental health professionals.

Can Therapy or Counseling Improve Our Relationship?

At Thriveworks in Cypress, TX we believe that anyone can benefit from couples therapy or marriage counseling, regardless of their relationship’s dynamics or the length of time they’ve been with their partner. This is due in part to the fact that every relationship can be improved—communication skills, our ability to empathize or listen, can all be honed. These are just a few of the points that a marriage counselor or couples therapist can help you with.

When you both partner with one of our providers, they’ll help you to:

  • Establish healthy boundaries
  • Highlight the importance and need for compromise
  • Rebuild trust after infidelity or dishonesty
  • Rekindle sexual intimacy together
  • Help both partners manage anger or anxiety

And with our online counseling and therapy options, it’s easy to still prioritize your relationship, even if you’re attending your session in person. Talk with your partner and your provider from the office, home, or on the go with online counseling and therapy through Thriveworks in Cypress, TX.

Been to see Tameka Johnson and can honestly say she is one great therapist! She really touches subjects that make a difference. My teen has been struggling with anxiety and depression for sometime now and I am so grateful that she was placed with Tameka's care cause after literally our 2nd visit I have already seen improvements in my daughter she’s starting to become more confident in herself and is improving our relationship which is a blessing I can’t wait to see the outcome when she is done with her I am so excited.
