What is your go-to approach for PTSD/trauma therapy?

I use empirically supported treatments for PTSD, including cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE). These therapies focus on allowing the client to safely and effectively confront the memories and feelings that arose during and after a traumatic event while also helping them to live healthy lives in the present.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

The tools that are taught in exposure-based therapies for PTSD focus on building a method to examine unhelpful thoughts and behavior patterns. These include questioning, analyzing, and re-assessing beliefs and actions to realign them with healthier and more effective strategies.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

The protocols for PTSD have a specific number of sessions; they don't drag on. The progress can be measured session-by-session and clients often see significant results by the 7th or 8th session. To name a few benefits, clients often see reductions in nightmares, irritability, startle responses, avoidance, and negative beliefs about themselves and the world.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Homework is an essential part of PE and CPT. Clients are asked to learn and practice skills in the real world that they learned in session to continue making steady progress.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

Effective therapy for PTSD can be emotionally difficult and draining. Making a commitment to complete the therapy can be a great motivator when sessions are hard and the homework seems overwhelming. Understanding what you are capable of and willing to do before starting is crucial.

Trauma and PTSD Counseling in Colorado Springs, CO

When people hear “trauma,” many think of the injured solider returning from battle, a child who has endured physical abuse, or possibly a college student whose handling the aftermath of a rape. These events are absolutely traumatic. What about a son or daughter whose parents recently divorced? Or the teenager that was in a car wreck, the mother who had a miscarriage, the man whose life was altered with a physical injury or the sudden breakup of a loved one?

These are all examples of trauma. If you have endured a traumatic experience and you are struggling as a result, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Colorado Springs, CO. We’re here to help you.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is defined as, “a deeply distressing or disturbing experience.” Any and all of the events listed can be traumatic. Think of trauma on a spectrum of 1-100, with many degrees to it. Then, mix in an individual’s history, tolerance and level of support. This will throw the spectrum completely off! Clearly, the tricky part of trauma is that an event can be traumatic for one person and not another.

If a person experiences the symptoms of trauma, does it mean they are weak? Absolutely not! There are many factors that will impact the severity of symptoms of trauma:

  • The level of support they have
  • The amount of additional stress they are under when the trauma occurs
  • The stress tolerance level they have with day to day events
  • Previous history of traumatic events

Symptoms of Trauma

  • Feeling helpless and out of control
  • Anxiety in all areas or specific areas of life
  • Difficult memories resurfacing throughout the day and night
  • Difficult emotions resurfacing throughout the day
  • Feeling disconnected, isolated.
  • Difficulty in trusting others
  • Sleeping patterns are thrown off. Inability to fall asleep and/or nightmares
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Body aches, Fatigue
  • Inability to make decisions
  • Irritation
  • Fast heartbeat

Healing from Trauma

Remember any event that is deeply distressing and disturbing can be traumatic. What can be done to help with the symptoms? Will the symptoms go away? These are great questions. Here are some tips to help a person find relief:

  • Exercise – make it fun! Take your dog for a walk, find a You Tube Video to exercise with.
  • Hang out with others – even if you don’t want to! It’s good for you. Many studies and doctors will say, “don’t isolate yourself”.
  • Take care of yourself. Sleep. Eat well. Find ways to relax.
  • Be mindful. Breathe. Experience what you are sensing. Don’t judge yourself.
  • Seek a professional’s help. If you are feeling extreme symptoms or you’ve tried these tips and they aren’t helping – get help.

Jerry was amazing! Jerry uses choice theory in order to help his patients grow and work through their problems. Choice theory was helpful through my relationship counseling but also could be used individually to helps each person grow themselves. Jerry used real scenarios in order to water down the theory, making it less scientific and more geared toward individual use. Jerry was patient, helpful, and very understanding.
