What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people through online therapy is to meet clients (quite literally) where they are. I find the best results from being able to connect with people in this way because it can take off some of the pressure from being in a traditional office setting and be more comfortable participating in therapy from your own couch. Online therapy is unique, and I always try to set the expectation in the very first session of how therapy works and to view it as an ongoing professional relationship to reach your goals.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Cognitive model: One of the core steps in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to demonstrate how our thoughts influence the way we feel and behave.
  • Circle of control: This tool works great for anxious people looking to understand how to separate what is within and outside of their control.
  • Communication styles: I love teaching my clients about the different styles of communication (aggressive, assertive, and passive) and working to improve communication and the quality of their relationships.
  • Distress tolerance: People who have low distress tolerance tend to become overwhelmed by stressful situations and may sometimes turn to unhealthy or even destructive ways of coping with these difficult emotions. Learning skills like these help you learn how to tolerate uncomfortable emotions.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: This is a type of relaxation skill to help reduce stress in your body by having you relax and then tense each muscle. I typically use this when working with clients who have experienced trauma to help assist in processing trauma in sessions.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when the treatment goals are being met. At the beginning of therapy, I ask my clients what they want to get out of therapy and, together, we create a treatment plan. When we stick to the plan together and adjust it as needed throughout treatment, it seems to make the biggest impact.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in online therapy by doing therapy worksheets, reading books or articles online, doing self-help booklets, or by watching educational videos on YouTube/other social media platforms. There is so much information available on the internet to help you learn the skills you need to reach your therapeutic goals.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, get yourself a private, comfortable place to sit that is free from distractions. Know that everything in your appointment stays between you and your therapist unless you provide written consent to share details of your session. It may be helpful to create a list of topics you want to cover in your first session so that you make sure to get your therapist on the same page as you and your goals for therapy.

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Do you ever wish that you could attend your appointment from the comfort and convenience of your own home? Well, when it comes to therapy and counseling, now you can! Say goodbye to the days where you sat in endless traffic only to arrive late to your therapy session. Say goodbye to the days where you struggled to find an appointment time that fits into your busy day. And say hello to the comfort, convenience, and flexibility of online counseling.

I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”

Oakland Counseling: What Is Online Therapy?

Despite popular belief, online counseling is not a new concept. It originated in the 1980s when the first online self-help group emerged. Today, you can get involved in these self-help groups, discuss mental health challenges on discussion boards, and even work with a therapist or counselor online.

If you choose to forego in-person counseling and work with a therapist online instead, you’ll have several options to choose from. You can choose to work with your therapist via phone call, videoconference, or even email/messaging. Are you wondering which option might be right for you? This might take some experimentation, but if you’re looking for a set, organized timeslot to meet with your Thriveworks Birmingham, MI therapist as you would in in-person therapy, it might be best for you to choose online counseling or videoconference counseling. If, however, you’d prefer a more casual therapy environment, your best option might be working with your therapist via email/messaging.

Online Therapy Counseling Benefits: Is It Right For Me?

Online therapy helps many people secure the mental health services they’re looking for and have been working for. For example, someone whose been looking for therapy but hasn’t quite been able to fit it into their schedule. Or, someone who has known for quite some time that they need counseling but has been stopped by the judgment they fear. In either case, online therapy can serve as the solution.

There are many different benefits in online therapy. For example, convenience, effectiveness, and reliability:

  1. Convenience: This is perhaps the number one reason people choose online therapy over in-person counseling. Because you can attend your session from virtually anywhere (as long as you have internet access), it is often the most convenient option. You don’t have to worry about driving to your therapy appointment after work before you get to return to the comfort of your home. You can return to the comfort of your home and continue to enjoy it while you attend your online therapy session.
  2. Effectiveness: It’s important to mention that you are not sacrificing any progress you might make in in-person counseling. Evidence shows that you can make just as much progress in online therapy, as it is just as effective! It might even be more effective, depending on your needs and preferences.
  3. Reliability: Finally, online counseling is reliable. You can count on making it to your session on time, as long as you have reliable internet access. You don’t have to worry about sickness, weather, or other external problems getting in your way. Which means you don’t have to worry about having to cancel and reschedule your appointment!

Thriveworks Birmingham, MI is here and ready to help you manage whatever it is you’re facing. We have a team of dedicated professionals who can help you over the phone, videoconference, or email/text messaging.

I had the honor of working with Lindsey at a previous job and she is one of the sweetest individuals I have ever met. Lindsey listens intently to everyone and is open to people from all walks of life. Lindsey is knowledgeable and passionate about advocating for mental health. This makes Lindsey a great leader and counselor. I would refer anyone I know to Lindsey!

*****I have been a patient of Sandra's for nearly 2 years now and I really can't say enough good things about her work with me. She is a true Christian counselor and that was exactly the perspective I needed to guide me down the path God was trying to lead me. She definitely strengthened my faith and made many of life's big problems seem like small speed bumps when looking at the big picture!! I highly recommend Sandra Q. if you are looking for the someone who honestly cares about you and the journey you are on. Remember, there’s ultimately only one way to peace in your life, and that’s to walk daily with the Prince of Peace, Christ Jesus!! *****

The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
