What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to teach my clients what it is, practice skill-building in sessions, and incorporate the cognitive model into the everyday lives of my clients. I enjoy using CBT in this way because it helps ensure that my clients understand what it is and how it works and actually implement useful skills into their lives that help them improve their mental health.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy:

  • The Cognitive Model 101: Studying how the way you think influences the way you feel and behave
  • Cognitive distortions: Identifying your own thinking errors that are worsening your mental health symptoms
  • Cognitive restructuring: Helps you to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts
  • Relaxation techniques: Implementing healthy ways to respond to distressing situations
  • Emotional reasoning: Basing conclusions on emotions rather than objective data

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy when they are putting in the work outside of sessions. Therapy can be an incredibly helpful hour to process your emotions and build skills; the change comes from practicing those skills regularly on your own.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in cognitive behavioral therapy with worksheets, journaling, relaxation skills, reading, and educational videos/podcasts about CBT.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. The doctor (PhD) I saw for therapy decided, on the second session, to pay more attention to doing things on his phone than to listening to me. He thought he was hiding what he was doing behind his portfolio, but he was not. I could see the reflection of what he was doing, and he was looking down more than up. He was pretending to listen but didn't do a very good job of that, because when I stopped talking, he would incorrectly try to restate what I said or, make a comment on what I said which turned out to not be relevant because it was clear he wasn't listening. He did not seem to want to be there. It was a horrible experience. I called the next day to complain to the lady on the phone, and got a sincere "I'm sorry" and that's it. When I got the bill (very expensive, by the way), I have been attempting to call the office to pay it over the phone but I keep getting told that the people that do the billing are currently busy and that I should call back. It should not be that difficult for someone to take a credit card number and apply it to my bill, especially a bill I shouldn't have to pay due to horrible service. I hope the other therapists at Thriveworks are better than the one I selected, and actually have interest in helping their patients.
