What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My approach when first working with clients online is to meet the clients wherever they are in their healing journey with unconditional positive regard. Creating a safe space for clients to be seen and heard is key, as we work together to meet their specific treatment goals. I find that there are many benefits to working with clients online. Online or telehealth therapy can allow the client to participate in sessions from the comfort of their own home. Not only does this help the client feel more comfortable in their environment, but helps make counseling more accessible to clients in any location. I also find that hosting sessions online allows me to use a more diverse set of tools and visual aids in working towards a goal that is tailored specifically to the client and their needs.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I teach the following tools in online therapy:

  • Developing coping strategies: Providing the client with different tools to use to help regulate emotions and or manage uncomfortable feelings or environment.
  • Exploration of emotions: Identifying and naming different emotions the client may be feeling based on experiences or situations retold or in the moment.
  • Mindfulness/somatic work: Teaching the clients tools to become more aware and regulate emotions by using meditation techniques, body scan scripts, and ways of becoming more attuned to how emotions are held in the body.
  • Psychoeducation: Educating clients on different therapy approaches and interventions that may help them reach their counseling goals.
  • Reflective listening: Communicating and listening carefully to the experience and expression of the client to ensure that the client is being heard and understood.
  • Creating treatment goals: Creating a plan that is specific and individual to the client to help them reach their goals for therapy and improve quality of life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy because they begin to show significant progress towards their goals and they begin to implement skills learned independently. The client begins to take initiative in improving their life, living the life they want to the best of their ability

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

I encourage clients to continue their work on goals outside of the online therapy session by practicing new skills learned and working on implementing them in real-life situations. Clients also have many options to supplement their time outside of sessions including worksheets, readings, personal writing, and many more! With all of these supplemented materials and applications, it is best to keep your treatment goals in mind and what is most helpful in making progress in those areas.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first online therapy session, you can begin to think of goals for therapy or specific areas in life you would like to work on with your counselor. Most importantly, your first online session is a chance for you and your therapist to get to know each other and for you to see if your therapist is a good fit for you. Just take a breath, calm your nerves, and be yourself!

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Online counseling is the alternative to in-person counseling, especially those looking for a more convenient option. Instead of working with your therapist at his or her office, you meet with them virtually from wherever you need or prefer! Yes, this means you can attend your therapy session from the comfort and convenience of your own home. Just make sure you have Wi-Fi or phone service when the time comes to connect with your counselor. Speaking of which, you’ll get to choose how you want to meet with your counselor. Your options include:

  • Phone counseling
  • Videoconference counseling
  • Email/text messaging

Any of the above can prove effective—just think about your needs, goals, and preferences, and then choose which option you think is right for you. For example, if you’d prefer to have a structured therapy session (as you do in the traditional in-person approach to therapy), you’re probably better off choosing phone counseling or videoconference counseling. On the other hand, if you’re open to a more casual and flexible experience, email/text messaging might suit you well!

Bucks Therapy: 5 Reasons to Work with an Online Therapist

If you’re contemplating whether online counseling is the right option for you, consider the following online therapy benefits:

  1. It’s the convenient option: Despite where you live—be it a city apartment or a secluded farmhouse—it’s pretty likely that you spend some amount of time traveling to and from your appointments. You might even spend more time traveling to and from your appointments than you do in your appointments! Online therapy eliminates the commute time, as you can attend your online sessions from anywhere. This means online therapy is the convenient and comfortable option.
  2. It’s tested and effective: Online therapy has actually been around for about 70 years. In the early 1950s, the first mental health hotline was created. And ever since, online therapy has only grown in popularity, prevalence, and functionality. Today, you can still call these hotlines, join online self-help groups, and of course work with a licensed counselor one-on-one.
  3. It’s affordable: You don’t have to worry about paying more for an online counseling appointment than you would an in-person counseling session. Today, many insurance companies cover online therapy services. And if yours doesn’t, that’s okay, because Thriveworks Bensalem provides affordable out-of-pocket rates.
  4. It’s fast: You also don’t have to worry about waiting weeks on end just to have you first appointment. With online counseling, you can typically schedule your appointment for the same day. It offers utmost flexibility and quick scheduling options.
  5. It’s easier to open up: Many people find that opening up to their therapist is difficult. They fear stigma and judgment, despite our insistence that we offer a judgment-free space. Fortunately, online counseling allows these individuals to finally open up to their counselor, as they feel safer communicating via virtual means.

In summary, online counseling is a convenient, effective, affordable, and flexible therapy option. Additionally, it might even help you open up to your counselor more easily, which means greater progress in therapy. If you want to explore what online counseling could do for you, reach out to Thriveworks Bensalem in Bucks County today.

Cassie is an exceptional therapist! She was extremely understanding throughout and approached my issues in a way that made me feel heard. Cassie has many skills and helped me with coping strategies to get me through my challenges. I do not know how I would have got to where I am now without her support.

I wasn't sure what to expect from therapy, but Jamie put me at ease right away. She is a generous listener who let me explain my situation and my feelings about it without any kind of judgement. She patiently led me through the difficult path of healing, giving me concrete steps to take to process what happened and to move forward. I would recommend her to anyone, no question.

She listens well, is compassionate, and helped me reframe my thinking when I was particularly discouraged and stuck. First met frank in the mid 80's as he came to Phoenix Arizona as a certified surgical technologist & worked with him there in a level 1 trauma center. It wasn't much after his stay in Phoenix he returned to Philadelphia where he then became Philadelphia fire fighter, and his effort of doing that excelled to peaking position as Captain for the PFD. As a friend of Frank through all his dedication and motivation to higher education , that his commitment & dedication hadn't already been in progress . But as a friend to see what he has done and become to his educate himself to helping people in the community is second to none. But more than anything he's a great person and to have him as my friend all these years seen what he's done to keep helping people in the private sector, bravo frank !
