What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

Jamie: I use solution-focused therapy mixed with CBT or DBT. I prefer solution-focused mixed with CBT or DBT because clients learn skills that will calm themselves while learning to address their maladaptive thoughts/behaviors/actions to ultimately find a solution to their presenting problems with guided work.

Kelly: My go-to approach for online therapy is to teach ACT therapy skills that help my client. ACT therapy emphasizes psychological flexibility, which involves being open to experiences, accepting difficult emotions, and taking committed action despite discomfort. I find this approach powerful because it encourages clients to move toward their values even when faced with challenges.

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

Jamie: I teach self-reflection online therapy so that the client learns to identify triggers, warning signs, automatic thoughts/behaviors/actions, and mindfulness that the client can employ during moments of increased stress and/or periods of conflict.

Kelly: I teach ACT therapy skills, communication skills, feelings acceptance skills, thought-defusion skills, centering in the present moment, and living a values-based life.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

Jamie: I know a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy when they can openly discuss topics of concern and regulate their emotions or behaviors without my intervention.

Kelly: When a client demonstrates an increase in psychological flexibility, it’s a strong indicator of meaningful progress in online therapy. Psychological flexibility involves being open to experiences, accepting difficult emotions, and taking committed action despite discomfort. As clients learn to navigate their thoughts and emotions more skillfully, they move toward their values and goals.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Jamie: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with bibliotherapy and the online use of guided meditation.

Kelly: Clients can supplement their time in online therapy with self-help resources and practices that I provide. I regularly give homework that helps clients understand themselves better within a psychological framework. My clients like to joke that I have a “fairy bag of magic” that I pull from—good ideas that lend a new perspective to life.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

Jamie: To prepare for your first online therapy session, look into bibliotherapy or meditations, perhaps finding some that you can use throughout your day. You can also look for podcasts and guided deep breathing exercises.

Kelly: To prepare for your first online therapy session, create a comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed. Test your technology, review confidentiality policies, and set intentions for what you hope to achieve. Be open-minded and approach the session without judgment. Remember that I am there to support you, and the online format can be just as effective as in-person sessions.
