What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is person-centered therapy (PCT). I prefer this style because it allows the couple to have their own way of building communication between them.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couple/marriage counseling: Gottman style, rules for fair fighting, and the magic of communication in a marriage.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when they come to the session and inform me that they had an argument or disagreement and were able to communicate through it without showing anger or aggression or leaving.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling with individual counseling. Also, when I assign “homework,” the couple needs to complete that assignment because it will help them grow as a couple.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can make sure all documents are read and signed by both parties. Couples can also come into the initial session with goals that they would like to accomplish.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples and Relationship Counseling—Therapists in Athens, GA

Are you and your spouse experiencing an issue that you just can’t seem to resolve? Relationship issues are common, but that certainly doesn’t make them any less stressful. If you’re considering seeking help to move forward in a positive manner with your relationship, a couples counselor at Thriveworks Counseling in Athens, GA may be able to offer the support and guidance you require.

Common Relationship Issues

While the exact circumstances of your issues are of course unique to you and your partner, there are common themes that many couples report disagreeing about. These can include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Feeling concerns about infidelity
  • Disagreeing about how to handle money
  • Feeling unhappy about a partner overworking or a job loss
  • Having different opinions on how to raise or discipline children
  • Struggling to balance a proper work/life balance
  • Coping with a major loss
  • Unaligned personal goals and values
  • One or both partners were unfaithful

Or, your issue might be something else entirely, and that’s okay! If you pursue couples therapy, the counselor you see may not have dealt with your exact circumstances before, but their training and insight can be applied to help in your situation.

Hesitating to Seek Help?

If you’re on the fence, consider asking yourself and your partner these questions:

  1. Have we tried resolving our issues in every way possible without positive results?
  2. Are we tired of arguing back and forth and struggling to communicate?
  3. Is there past trauma that we need to overcome in order to move forward happier and healthier?
  4. Is our spark and connection slowly fading and we don’t know how to bring it back?

There are so many benefits to working with a couples counselor. More than we can describe here. If you’re even thinking about scheduling an appointment, it might be time for you to pick up the phone or head to our online booking portal. Our counselors want to help you and your partner be successful and happy. You just have to start.
