Discover how starting couples/marriage therapy can support your own journey toward a happier, more fulfilling life.
My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is attachment-based therapy and a relational model. I find this is the best way to connect and support couples in learning to be more compassionate with each other so they go from a place of fighting and creating 'either/or' solutions to actively listening to each other and rejoining as partners to find 'both/and' solutions for their problems.
In couples therapy, the tools we use are meditation and mindfulness for awareness. We use gratitude practices to help clients connect more with the things they enjoy about their partners and learn to share those with each other. We use positive communication and couples dialogue in order to start expressing feelings without attacking the other. We also use several regulation techniques and breaks in order to help decrease escalation within the relationship.
It is clear to see that couples are making progress when they are no longer taking each other's emotions and pain personally. They are able to communicate about the struggles they are having and work together in order to create those 'both/and' solutions. It is also a significant indicator that things are getting better when they stop seeing each other as enemies and are reconnected as supports for each other.
During their off time, clients can practice the homework and any communications skills that are needed in order to solidify the skills. They can also write down problems that are hard to resolve so the fighting doesn't continue between sessions.
In preparing for your first session, take time to recognize that this is not about proving your partner wrong but working to understand and connect with your partner as well as being open to finding new ways to express yourself in order to get yourself heard as well. Couples therapy requires both individuals to make changes in order to heal and improve the relationship.
