What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My preferred modality is based in cognitive behavioral relationship therapy and the Gottman Method, with an emphasis on working on skills like emotional recognition and communication skills.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I use the following tools:

  • Cognitive behavioral relationship therapy
  • The Gottman method.
  • Communication skills
  • Emotional recognition and regulation skills

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I can tell a client is making meaningful progress in couples therapy when they can come back session after session and confidently report their ability to use skills, strategies, and routines taught in-session surrounding how to connect, share, and increase their ability to work together. Also, when they are using terminology they learned, they demonstrate increased awareness, and “fair fighting” rules, empathetic communication, and relationship check-ins are reported to be helpful.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

I encourage clients to supplement their work in couples therapy by implementing positive, healthy, and effective relationship rituals, or what we refer to as pleasant events, in their daily lives and activities that help them feel they are making progress toward a life worth living, both for themselves and for their partner. They can also discuss activities, practices, routines, and habits that provide life satisfaction and help them feel like they are working toward long-term life goals for themselves and within the relationship. We will often look at a balanced life wheel that I have been known to share and capture the areas they currently working on.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

I encourage clients to prepare for their first couple's session by thinking about the areas of their lives and symptoms they hope treatment can help address and how these symptoms are impacting the relationship. They should also think about what they are experiencing, problems they are facing together, and future goals they want to work toward together.

Starting Couples therapy

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Couples Therapy in Woodbridge, VA—Expert Relationship Help

Are relationship issues putting stress on you, your partner, and even your home life? Don’t let it take its toll on your happiness; consider Thriveworks Woodbridge couples therapy to resolve what’s bothering you and move forward in a happier, healthier relationship.

Relationship Ups and Downs: Do We Need Couples Therapy?

It’s not uncommon for couples to experience ups and downs throughout their relationship. You won’t always be on the same side of the fence over every element of life, and most of the time you’ll be able to resolve an argument or address an issue on your own, without support.

It’s for this reason that many people continue weathering the storm, even when their relationship starts to have more downs than ups. But why put off trying Woodbridge couples counseling?

If you’re experiencing an issue you can’t seem to overcome or you’re stuck in “down” mode, couples therapy can help facilitate resolution before your otherwise great relationship continues to go downhill.

Common Problems, Uncommon Approach

Many couples face similar issues at different times in their relationships; while the themes may be the same, we also recognize that every couple’s situation is unique. Are you facing any of these common issues?

  • Communication problems
  • Different thoughts on raising kids
  • Disagreeing about money
  • Struggling with intimacy issues
  • Concerns about career matters
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Infidelity or general trust issues
  • Jealousy

Or is something else making you feel stuck? No matter what it is, an experienced Thriveworks Woodbridge couples counselor can help, providing you with advice and a place to discuss whatever conflict you’re facing.
