Award-winning therapy & psychiatry
My go to working with teens is CBT and motivational interveiwing. I do my best to appropriately empower teens to think about what they need and want.
I teach the following tools with individual therapy such as:
I can tell a teen is making meaningful progress in individual therapy when they are able to come back session after session and be able to confidently report and process their ability to use skills, strategies and routines they have been working on in treatment and usually how they are able to effectively communicate and collaborate with parents/guardians. When they are using terminology they learned and demonstrate increased awareness and ability to through utilizing the skills to regulate and manage whatever they are there working on in treatment goals and able to understand how they feel emotionally and what needs they are looking for, and ability to regulate.
I encourage teens to supplement their work in individual therapy with positive, healthy and effective activities, or what we refer to as pleasant events, to utilize in their daily life and routines that work towards them feeling they are making progress towards a life worth living. Discussing activities, practices, routines, and habits that provide life satisfaction and help them feel like they are working toward long term life goals. We will often look at a balanced life wheel that I have been know to share. Monitor screen time, time spent isolating and generally trying to work on their social and family supports.
I encourage teens to prepare for their first individual session by thinking about the areas of their life in which they hope treatment can help to support to address what symptoms they are experiencing, problems they are facing and future goals in their life they want to work toward.

Child and adolescent therapy investigates and understands the development of the mind and finds ways to work with individuals to help improve, heal and uplift their lives. There are many factors that cause stress in children and adolescents, and therapists can work with the child, the parents and the family to find the causes of their stresses and challenges, work on skills to convey their emotions healthily and make goals for themselves. Family stressors like divorce, a new sibling and a death in the family can trigger a change in the child’s behavior, such as isolation, anxiety and inability to focus.
In the teenage years, adolescents can experience emotions that are like the waves in the ocean—one minute their moods are up, and the next minute, they are down. Sometimes it is hard for parents to know if the emotions their adolescent is experiencing is the result of normal development or something that should be addressed by a therapist.
