I am loving working with my therapist, Vanessa, from Thriveworks! She has such helpful insights and strategies for the challenges I face. She has such patience, as I try to learn and apply new concepts she shows me. She shows me ways of looking at past events in my life in a whole new way. It is exciting to feel some progress toward the positive, in my thought patterns, because of Vanessa’s gentle guidance. I am a very happy Thriveworks client!!!

Obsessive-compulsive disorder therapy (OCDT) FAQs

How does obsessive-compulsive disorder therapy work?

Therapy for OCD will often include the use of evidence-based approaches such as exposure therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). These approaches can help desensitize you to feared stimuli over time, teach helpful coping skills, and decrease the intensity of symptoms. Your provider may also recommend medication to help lessen the impact of symptoms and improve overall functioning.

What is the cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder?

There is no single proven cause of OCD. However, researchers believe genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors can all play a role.

How do you know if you have obsessive-compulsive disorder?

A professional diagnosis from a qualified mental health professional is the only sure way to know if you have OCD. That said, some common signs of OCD include obsessive behavior (such as fear of contamination), difficulty with uncertainty, unwanted thoughts, intense stress, having strict routines, repetitive behavior patterns, & more.

Is obsessive-compulsive disorder an anxiety disorder?

Yes, OCD is a common anxiety disorder. Like other anxiety disorders, it causes intense fear, worry, and stress, though treatment for each disorder differs and will be tailored to your unique symptoms.

Is obsessive-compulsive disorder genetic?

While genetics are thought to play a role in the onset of OCD,  the exact cause is unknown and environment and brain anatomy can also be factors in its development.

How common is obsessive-compulsive disorder?

OCD is a relatively common disorder, estimated to affect 1-3% of people during their lifetimes. Research also states it is more commonly diagnosed in women than men.
